A Journey to the Stars

As a travel writer and a mother of three, I am always on the lookout for experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. Our recent adventure to Teide National Park Sunset & Stargazing was one such experience that promised to be both educational and awe-inspiring. The journey began with a bus ride from Los Cristianos, where we were greeted by Craig and his team, who were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly welcoming. The ride itself was a treat, offering breathtaking views of Tenerife and the neighboring island of La Gomera. My kids were glued to the windows, pointing out the landscapes and asking questions about the islands’ volcanic origins.

Upon reaching our first stop, a local Canarian restaurant, we were treated to a simple yet satisfying meal. While the dinner was not the highlight of the evening, it provided a wonderful opportunity to mingle with fellow stargazers. My children, ever the social butterflies, quickly made friends with other kids on the tour, sharing stories and laughter over plates of Canarian potatoes and BBQ chicken. It was a reminder of how travel can bring people together, creating connections that transcend language and culture.

Sunset Above the Clouds

After dinner, we continued our ascent into the mountains, heading towards the Parque Recreativo Pinar De Chio. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed, with recent lava flows and dense forests creating a dramatic backdrop. We arrived at the sunset viewing point just in time to witness the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the sea of clouds. With a glass of cava in hand, I watched as my children marveled at the sight, their faces lit up with wonder.

The Night Skies team captured the moment beautifully, taking individual and group photos that were later shared with us at no extra cost. It was a thoughtful touch that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience without worrying about capturing the perfect shot. As the sky darkened, we were treated to a time-lapse video of the sunset, a memento of a magical evening that we would cherish forever.

Stargazing Extravaganza

The final leg of our journey took us to the Mirador de las Narices del Teide, where the real magic began. The Night Skies team had set up high-powered telescopes, ready for us to explore the wonders of the universe. Under the guidance of Craig and his team, we embarked on a safari across the night sky, learning about constellations, planets, and galaxies. My children were particularly fascinated by the sight of Neptune and the Moon through the telescopes, their excitement palpable as they took turns peering into the eyepiece.

The expert commentary provided by the team was both informative and engaging, weaving together science and mythology in a way that captivated both young and old. It was a reminder of the vastness of the universe and our small place within it, a humbling yet exhilarating experience that left us all in awe.

As we made our way back to Los Cristianos, my children chattered excitedly about the stars they had seen, their imaginations ignited by the wonders of the night sky. It was a fitting end to an unforgettable evening, one that had not only enriched our understanding of the cosmos but also strengthened the bonds between us as a family.
