Highlights
  • 454R+GQ Cueva de León - The adventure begins in La Ventana and takes approximately 6 hours.

We will sail in our panga boat looking for all the marine life that the ocean want to gives us.

Get ready to swim with huge schools of mobulas, do snorkel with dolphins and killer whales, and see whales also. With some luck, you will enjoy an unforgettable day! Orca sightings have become more frequent but are not a daily common sighting.

This is an outdoor expedition focused on searching for marine life. Each day is unique and nature is nature, nothing can be guaranteed. Please note we don’t engage in harassment of wildlife.

As the activity has gained popularity, and since swimming with orcas is not regulated, there have been instances where the animals are being harrased for hours by many boats, and the activity done in an unsafe way.
Locals of the area have agreed on good practices:
Not swimming with orcas if:

  • they are eating
  • they are cruising at high speed
  • are being followed by many boats
  • unsafe weather conditions

Swimming with orcas if:

  • they are interested on us
  • moving slowly
  • not being evasive
  • safe weather conditions and few boats around

Swimming with whales is prohibited in Mexico.

What's Included
  • Use of snorkeling equipment
  • All fees and taxes included
Additional Information

La Ventana is traditionally known as one of the best sites in the world for kite surfing. However, in recent years, this amazing place has become popular along with Cerralvo Island (also known as Jacques Cousteau Island), for its Mobula ray abundance during the months of March-June, and for its whales and dolphins transit. These conditions have resulted in frequent orca encounters, as they feed on Mobulas.

July to December is also a great time to do this adventure since water temperature and visibility will make this day an amazing adventure. During the winter, whales transit in between the coast and the island, which serves as another great opportunity to encounter amazing marine life.

To sum it up, La Ventana and Cerralvo Island are a magical place where anything can happen during our ocean safaris.

Amazing Ocean Safari! - We went on the Ocean Safari out of La Ventana and could not have been more impressed with Mexico Travel Adventures. We had previously booked a "snorkel with whale sharks" tour with another company but had to cancel because the season had not opened yet. Looking for something else to do during our two days in La Paz, I found MTA's Ocean Safari, and am so glad that I did! The online booking process was easy, and Karen (the owner, I believe) was communicative during the days leading up to the trip. I had some questions about dietary restrictions and picking a good weather window for our trip, and she was quick to respond to all of my concerns. Some of the pictures on Tripadvisor show people snorkeling with orcas, and obviously that would have been incredible. But anyone who goes into this experience with that expectation is being unrealistic. Nothing can be guaranteed on a wildlife tour - the animals will go where they want to. That said, we were fortunate enough to see two sperm whales, lots of bow-riding dolphins, a couple of mobula rays, and sea lions. We also had the opportunity to snorkel at two beautiful reefs off of Cerralvo Island. Jorge was an excellent captain. He kept the boat steady even when the afternoon winds came up and made the seas choppy. Our guide, Lorenza, was fantastic. I have spent many years guiding kayak and wildlife tours, from Alaska to Hawaii, and worked with lots of guides along the way. Lorenza was a natural guide and educator. She was friendly, enthusiastic, and attentive to our needs, always checking to make sure we had enough to eat drink, that our snorkel gear fit properly, that we were warm and comfortable enough on the boat, etc. She has a background in marine biology, so she was passionate and knowledgeable about everything we saw, but more than that she was able to explain things in a way that was fun and easy to understand without a science background. She also didn't try to make something up if she didn't know the answer but said "That's a good question" and looked up the answer. She was conscientious of the wildlife we encountered, and we left the area when the sperm whales became agitated by all of the other boats dropping snorkelers into the water around them. Even more impressive, she did all of the above in English. I can't imagine how hard it is to guide a tour in a language that's not your first one. Anyone can take you out on a boat to look for whales. But it's the people that make the difference between a good day and an unforgettable day. Jorge and Lorenza both went out of their way to go above and beyond what we expected. On a ten-day trip to Baja, this was the best thing we did. We'll happily book another tour with MTA when we return.

A Memorable Day Exploring the Ocean - Laventana & Cerralvo Island Tour - I recently had the incredible opportunity to embark on the Laventana & Cerralvo Island guided tour with my husband. This six-hour adventure, starting from the charming village of La Ventana, unfolded into a memorable day filled with educational opportunities and spectacular marine encounters. This tour was all about appreciating the wonders of the ocean! The panga boat ride provided a thrilling experience as we set out to explore the open waters in search of marine life. One remarkable aspect of this tour was the unexpected encounters we had, even though we were well aware that we were not in the peak season to witness the famous schools of mobulas. Despite the timing, the tour delivered unforgettable moments. While nothing in nature is guaranteed, we were fortunate enough to encounter a pod of dolphins, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day. Sailing alongside playful dolphins was another highlight, and their acrobatic displays left us in awe. The snorkeling experience was nothing short of amazing. Our guide, Fernando, took us to vibrant coral reefs, and it was a revelation. Not only did we get to explore the colorful underwater world, but Fernando also shared his wealth of knowledge about coral. His insights into the delicate ecosystem of corals and their importance in marine life added a whole new dimension to our snorkeling adventure. It was a privilege to learn so much from an expert like him while surrounded by the beauty of the ocean. Again, our guide, Fernando, deserves special mention. His passion for marine life and the Baja California Sur region was infectious. His extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for the ocean and its inhabitants enriched our experience. Fernando's ability to share interesting facts and stories about the marine life we encountered added depth to the tour. It's essential to remember that each day on this tour is unique, and nature is unpredictable. While you can't control what you'll see, the tour guides' knowledge of the area and their ability to find and identify marine life is impressive. They make every effort to ensure you have a memorable experience. This an adventure that truly allows you to disconnect from the everyday and immerse yourself in the wonders of the ocean, guided by the expertise and passion of individuals like Fernando and Captain Carlos. Their contributions added immense value to an already exceptional experience.

Stunning marine life! - Our guide for the trip was Daleth, and her and the captain were truly amazing! It was the highlight of our entire trip. We felt very safe the whole way because of Daleth’s clear communication and the captain’s expertise. They asked us what we were interested in seeing, and we got to swim with a whale shark, multiple schools of dolphins and mobula rays, and on a beautiful reef with sea lions. Daleth took great care in telling us about the community and ecosystem we were in, making sure we felt comfortable and that we knew how to keep the animals we were swimming with safe by not touching or bothering them. I would easily return many times :-)

If you love the sea and its wonders, this is a great activity to enjoy with your partner, friends or family! - Our captain Enrique and our guide Mateo were just amazing. We were lucky enough to swim with dolphins and sea lions, but we also saw a whole lot more of beautiful species from the boat and while snorkeling. I highly recommend taking a go pro with you to capture all the special moments. Lunch was also pretty good. Awesome experience!

Orcas and Mobula Rays everywhere - That was an awesome experience. We got lucky and found the killer whales in less than 40 minutes and they literally hung out with us all day. There were 13 of them, hunting Mobula rays and it was hands down the best killer whale experience of my life. I'd gone snorkeling with them in Norway before, but this experience totally exceeded all my expectations
