Highlights
  • Jacamar Naturalist Tours - Glossophagian or nectar-eating bats use their echo-location system to search for flowers with nectar even in the absence of light. Some flowers only open their petals at night, with the bat being its most important pollinator. This example of a symbiotic reproduction-food relationship is part of the magic that can be observed on a night tour. Like the bat, much of the biodiversity of the rainforest has nocturnal habits. Their adaptations have allowed them to survive in a world without light, obtaining advantages over their competition for food-gathering, and protecting them from their light-dependent predators.
Frogs with charming sounds and colors, sloths, insects, and even snakes can be enjoyed at this wonderful rainforest night party.

Night Frog Tour! - We went on a night frog hike where we saw all types of frogs (blue jeans, glass, white-lipped, red-eye tree forg), spiders, and snakes (including a fer-de-lance!). The kids absolutely loved it. The guides, Marco and Chris, were wonderful. Very knowledgeable and safety-oriented. We highly recommend this tour.

Love the Jacamar tour guides! - We went on both a sloth/bird tour and a night exploration walking tour, and they were both fantastic! Our kids (10&12) especially loved spotting creatures at night. Both of our tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and it was very clear how much they love Costa Rica and its wildlife. They made our kids passionate about Costa Rican culture and wildlife, which is impressive!!

Night Wildlife Hike/Tour - great experience - We did the hanging bridges tour and the night tour with Jacamar. The guides were very knowledgeable and fun to be with, they shared lots of knowledge in a way that was intereseting for kids and adults alike! Trips were very well organized. The night tour was the most memorable hike and exciting for both adults and kids! Lots of wild life - saw many different kinds of frogs, snakes, spiders, etc. Was highlight of our trip!

David was a great guide - We were lucky enough to have a private tour! Our guide, David, was AWESOME! His enthusiasm, knowledge and ability to spot interesting wildlife made for an excellent experience. The variety of animals encountered was impressive. David tried very hard to keep up with our many questions. The property is wonderfully managed for longevity of the business AND the wildlife they depend on. It may be a short "hike" but it was packed with critters and crawlies. This is the one thing I would do again on La Fortuna.

Fun for all the family - Walter took our groups of nine people aged 10-82 for a night walk. It was a great forest experience we would definitely recommend. So much fun for everyone, spotting frogs and snakes!

Night Walk with Diego - 5 Stars - Our tour guide was Diego Núñez and he was friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate. Our tour started before we even got to the rain forest, as we saw a sloth and he had the driver pull over the van, whipped out the monocular on the tripod, and helped us take photos and videos of the active sloth. After that, we stopped for a rainbow macaw, and again were given the opportunity to have photos taken by Diego, a master photographer. The actual tour was perfect, as we started with a snack (heart of palm hash with a homemade corn tortilla), then went on a 2 hour hike, where we spotted and learned about frogs, insects, trees, plants, and the forest as a whole. We appreciated Diego and his expertise!

Cool experience - What a cool experience! The rainforest is so different at nighttime and it was fun walking around in with our flashlights looking for nature. Our tour guide was great and seemed genuinely interested in what it was we were finding. Highly recommend but if you have mobility issues or are afraid of the dark you should avoid this activity.
