Samurai test-cutting tameshigiri experience in Kyoto (Tameshigiri)

Your childhood dream now comes true. Wear a hakama or samurai armor (only available at the samurai and ninja museum) and use a real samurai sword to cut tatami mats. This centuries-old samurai practice is called Tameshigiri. It was born as a form of martial arts since the samurai always had to train to perfect their skills especially during the time of peace. Test cutting is used to check both the quality of a samurai sword and also the sophistication of the sword using skills of the samurai. There are many different materials to test the quality of cuts including thin steel, rice straws and tatami mats. In this experience you will use a material shown in the picture (tatami mats made out of bamboo).

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • At least 18 years old. Participants younger than 18 can also join the sword training by wearing a traditional hakama but they are not allowed to do the final cutting.
  • At least 155 cm tall

Fun activity! - It was fun and entertaining, cutting bamboo with a sword and especially the museum and the tour! It was well done!

Not what we expected - We arrived about 20 min early so they rushed us upstairs to complete our “training”. It was nice (hence 3 stars) as it was just us, but it was so short and rushed I do wonder if we missed what the larger class did? We put on outfits, and were told how to hold a d swing the fake sword. Then we sat and were given instructions on how to use the real one. We each got 2 turns to swing and cut the bat. That was it. We changed and went downstairs where our “group” (others for our time slot) were trying on the gun costumes and taking photos. They went upstairs and we tried on the clothes and took some photos. We were in and out in 29 minutes. I think the 2 hours is because if you gave a group if more then 4 hour sitting waiting for each person to get their turn. Had we been in the larger group this would have been a lot of watching and waiting and would have been 1 star. Just not worth the money. The teacher did not seem to want to be there. The 2 ladies helping take photos down stairs were nice. Also directions take you to the museum the class is a short walk away. I just can’t recommend given the experience and cost.

Better experiences out there - Better experiences out there. This felt like a sausage factory. One person after the other. There was no time to take in and enjoy the experience. You only get one go at using the sword. If all you are after is holding a sword and slicing a straw tree once then by all means book it. The tour of the museum was informative and worth it.

Ok - Too many participants, not enough gear. Space small. Costumes smelly. Would have been better if they limited class size and took better care. A little “low rent” but was informative, fun and entertaining.

Very disappointing experience, did not live up to the description - A very disappointing experience. The description specifically stated that "This tour/activity will have a maximum of 10 travelers". There were 26 people in the room. The first hour was just getting our costume on. There was only one instructor helping with this. I would have given this one star but the instructor was entertaining. We had 10 minutes of "training" and then waited in line to cut a tatami mat. We were allowed a second try if we were unable to cut the mat on our first. After the mat cutting, we went downstairs to take pictures with samurai helmets and armor. It was fun but not the experience we had expected. There were only 2 people running around helping people with their costumes and about 30 people dressing up to take pictures. It was very hectic. The description also stated there would be ninja star throwing. This did not happen at all. "You will be using a real samurai sword katana and cut a tatami mat. The reservation also includes samurai dress up and ninja star throw. amurai Sword Cutting Experience in Kyoto – Tameshigiri lets you become a modern-day samurai-in-training for a day!" At the end we went into a small room with 6 posters and 2 samurai models. I guess this was the "museum". Informative but a bit disappointing.

Disappointing Experience and not for anyone younger then 18 - The only reason I gave 2 stars and not one is because the instructor and samurai giving the lesson was great. The whole thing was disorganized and difficult to find. No where on Viator did it say this experience is for 18 and older or to go to the website to verify information. When we got there, the guys at the samurai museum said it’s on our website. How were we to know that? I booked this so my kids can have an experience with a real samurai and my teenage kid. I would not have booked it otherwise. It says it’s for a group of 10 but there were 28 in our class. Not enough clothes and he had to run back to find wooden katanas for everyone. It overall was a disappointing experience and I don’t write negative reviews but wish I saw one like this when I was booking for my family.

Very underwhelming - Very underwhelming. I think the whole experience lasted 30mins and the actual activity 15mins. You only get to cut 1 thing. If you don't cut it properly you get 1 more turn and that's it. Way overpriced for what you get.

More of a "scam" than an "experience" - This "experience" is not worth 100€! First we were allowed to play dress-up with costumes that were very rancid and then we were forgotten for the actual training with the samurai! The costumes were just a chest cover, a helmet and a sword, which not everyone got because there were simply too few. The refund was pretty quick, though. It seemed like a scam to us and to another couple who had booked this "experience". It's a real shame that something like this is offered on TripAdvisor...
