Starting the Climb

Mount Kilimanjaro - Machame Gate (1490 m) - Machame camp (2980 m), Hiking time: 7 hours,

Distance: About 18 km’s - Habitat: Montane forest.

Your day starts early with a briefing, followed by breakfast and a 45-minute drive from Moshi (910m) to the Machame village (1490m). The guides and porters prepare and pack the supplies and your equipment in the village. Depending on the condition of the road, it is possible to drive from the village to the Machame gate, but if not, the muddy 3 km walk will take about 1 hour to complete. After registering at the gate office, you start your ascent and enter the rainforest. You will receive a lunch pack at the gate and you can also drink bottled water you bought at Springlands Hotel in Moshi. There is a possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very soggy, muddy and slippery experience. In the evening the porters will boil drinking and washing water and the cook will prepare dinner before you retire to your tent for the night. Night temperatures can already drop to freezing point at Machame campsite. Machame Gate (1490 m) - Machame camp (2980 m), Hiking time: 7 hours,

Additional Information

Porters carry all your gear and provisions, while a chef prepares every meal for you. On the Machame Route, distinct from the hut accommodations on the Marangu Route, you’ll bed down in tents (included in the service), which the porters will set up for you. You’ll dine in a meal tent or on an outdoor mat. This lends the Machame Route, also known as the ‘Whiskey Route,’ an edge for the adventure-seeking trekkers, rewarding them with more impressive vistas than other paths. You’ll experience picturesque evenings at Shira and unveil the mystic beauty of Kibo’s magnificent Barranco Wall. For those with a zest for excitement, the Machame Route is a visual journey, offering an array of scenic displays.

Their excellent care, support and advice got us to the top. We enjoyed trekking with them. learning about Kilimanjaro, enjoying the beautiful sights and sounds. I am happy that Charles and his team helped us when the going became hard. Thank you, Zara, for pairing us with a wonderful team, providing us with appropriate gear and equipment. Asante sana

Unforgettable - The most incredible experience made unforgettable by Abdi and his team. All the guides and porters were amazing and there is no way I would have been able to summit without them. They cared for everyone incredibly, ensuring everyone had anything they needed. Food was incredible, they all constantly had smiles on their faces and sang and danced for us to keep morale up. There aren't enough words to thank the team, from guides to porters, from drivers to hotel staff. Life-changing experience

Thank you!! - The porters, chefs and guides were so so helpful - they couldn't have been more supportive! Most of our large group (32 of 34) was able to make it to the summit and it was all because of their guidance

Great adventure! Despite workers lack of company support - Great guide and great porters! We had the best time climbing Kilimanjaro on a route of 6 days! We felt so safe and well taken care of from the beginning to the end by all the staff. My one complaint regards the conditions of the workers/guides/porters. I don’t feel good about not seeing the company’s logo on their clothes, shoes, sleeping bags or tents. As a costumer I want the porters to have good equipment and gear. The overall impression that the company was lacking with giving their workers good gears were it’s clear that they belong to Zara tours felt very troubling. I hope to see a change in this regard before I recommend this traveling firm to others!
