As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, I was thrilled to explore Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. My guide for the day, Jonathan Rukundo, was a gem. Punctual, polite, and fluent in English, he made the experience seamless and stress-free. Our journey began at the Kandt House, a site that offers a fascinating glimpse into Rwanda’s colonial past from the 1880s to the 1930s. The guide at the Kandt House was incredibly informative, patiently walking us through the early history of colonialism in the country. For anyone interested in the historical tapestry of Rwanda, this site is a must-visit.

The Kandt House set the tone for a day filled with learning and exploration. As someone who values sustainability, I was particularly impressed by the Bwiza Riverside homes. This project, a collaboration between private African developers and the Rwandan government, is a beacon of environmentally sustainable housing. Our next stop was downtown for some personal shopping. Kigali’s bustling streets are a testament to its vibrant culture and economic growth. The local shops offered a variety of unique items, perfect for souvenirs or gifts. Lunch at Sundowner was a delightful experience, with a local buffet that tantalized the taste buds. The food was excellent, and the service was impeccable, making it a perfect spot to recharge before continuing our exploration.

Embracing Kigali’s Local Flavor

No visit to Kigali would be complete without a stop at the Kimironko Market. This lively market is a sensory overload in the best possible way. Jonathan expertly guided us through the maze of stalls, helping us find exactly what we needed while also allowing us to soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The market is a microcosm of Rwandan life, bustling with energy and filled with the rich aromas of local produce and handmade crafts.

As the day came to a close, I found myself reflecting on the unique blend of history, culture, and modernity that Kigali offers.
