From Coffee Plantations to Island Hikes: My Unforgettable Lake Kivu Adventure

When my plans for gorilla trekking in Rwanda fell through, I found myself on an unexpected adventure at Lake Kivu. Join me as I explore the scenic beauty, cultural richness, and coffee heritage of this stunning region.

A Journey Through Rwanda’s Thousand Hills

The moment I set foot in Kigali, I was reminded of why I fell in love with Africa in the first place. The vibrant landscapes, the rich culture, and the warm hospitality of the people always draw me back. This time, my adventure led me to the western region of Rwanda, a place I had yet to explore. My original plan was to embark on a gorilla trekking expedition in Volcanoes National Park, but unforeseen circumstances led me to a different path. Instead, I found myself on the Lake Kivu Adventure, a tour that promised scenic views, cultural encounters, and a deep dive into Rwanda’s coffee heritage.

As we drove from Kigali to Kibuye, the nickname “the country of a thousand hills” became evident. The rolling landscapes were a photographer’s dream, each hill offering a new perspective, a new story. Our guide, Bernard, was not just a guide but a storyteller, weaving tales of Rwanda’s history and culture as we journeyed through the countryside. His passion for his homeland was infectious, and I found myself captivated by his stories.

The Allure of Lake Kivu

Arriving at Lake Kivu, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The lake’s calm waters mirrored the sky, creating a perfect canvas for the surrounding hills. Our first stop was a coffee plantation in Rubengera, where I had the opportunity to learn about the coffee-making process from start to finish. As a coffee enthusiast, this was a dream come true. The cooperative’s dedication to sustainable practices was inspiring, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the humble coffee bean.

After a delightful lunch at a lakeside restaurant, we embarked on a boat tour to explore the islands of Lake Kivu. The highlight was a hike on Napoleon Cap Island, where we were greeted by a chorus of birds and the sight of bats taking flight. The panoramic view from the top was breathtaking, offering a glimpse of the Congo Nile and the vast expanse of the lake. As we made our way back, we were treated to the sight of cows swimming between islands, a unique spectacle that added a touch of whimsy to the day.

A Lasting Impression

Throughout the tour, Bernard’s genuine warmth and knowledge made the experience truly memorable. He wasn’t just a guide; he was a friend, sharing in our excitement and wonder. His insights into Rwanda’s culture and environment enriched the journey, leaving me with a deeper understanding of this beautiful country.

As the sun set over Lake Kivu, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I felt a profound sense of gratitude. This adventure had been more than just a tour; it was a journey of discovery, a chance to connect with the land and its people. I left Rwanda with a heart full of memories and a promise to return, eager to explore more of its hidden treasures. Until then, I’ll cherish the moments spent on the shores of Lake Kivu, a place where nature and culture intertwine in perfect harmony.
