South Coast tour | Overnight in Vik or the surrounding
Seljalandsfoss - The tour’s first breathtaking sight is the “hidden” waterfall at Gljufrabui, concealed in a cave and often missed by visitors – but we will guide you to it! Nearby is the magnificent 60-meter-high Seljalandsfoss waterfall, cascading off the Eyjafjallajokull volcano into a deep pool. A path allows you to walk around this waterfall, though it can be slippery, so please consult our guide first. This location is popular, having appeared in numerous music videos, TV shows, and films.
Skogafoss - The next stop on our South Coast tour is Skogafoss, one of the world’s most iconic waterfalls, featured in “Game of Thrones” and many other films and TV shows. The 60-meter-high waters create sheets of spray and stunning rainbows on sunny days. You can climb stairs to view the falls from above. A café and restrooms are available if you wish to enjoy a snack or coffee.
Reynisfjara Beach - The final stop on your first day on the South Coast is the renowned black sand beach at Reynisfjara, once ranked by National Geographic among the Top Ten non-tropical beaches globally. The dark volcanic sands are met by powerful Atlantic waves, and the imposing sea stacks of Reynisdrangar provide a supernatural photo opportunity. Avoid getting too close to the waves, as they can be unexpectedly fast and strong! Hexagonal basalt columns adorn the cliffs, offering a habitat for puffins and other summer seabirds. The stone sea arches of Dyrholaey are visible in the distance.
Glacier Lagoon + Amphibian boat tour | Overnight in Reykjavik
Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon - The highlight of your South Coast adventure is the Diamond Beach and the Glacier Lagoon at Jokulsarlon.
Diamond Beach is named for the countless sparkling fragments of multi-colored icebergs found here, sculpted into fantastic shapes by wind and waves on the black sand Atlantic beach. The dazzling ice pieces offer incredible photo opportunities and make it an ideal spot for a proposal.
Glacier Lagoon - Just a short distance from Diamond Beach is the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, one of Iceland’s “crown jewels.”
Here, massive bright-blue and ghostly-white icebergs break away from the receding Breidamerkurjokull glacier and crash into a growing meltwater lagoon. From there, the icebergs slowly drift towards the Atlantic Ocean. You will have the chance to embark on an exhilarating 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the icebergs, getting close to these icy giants and possibly spotting a seal or two.
Jokulsarlon is an extraordinary place, a bucket-list destination featured in several Hollywood movies, yet it remains peaceful and tranquil. The scenery is breathtaking and ever-changing, as wind and tides move the icebergs in various directions. After experiencing the magic of the Glacier Lagoon, it will be time to return to Reykjavik.
Hofskirkja Church - Hofskirkja is the last church of its kind built in Iceland, dating back to the 19th century. The church’s roof is made of deep layers of turf and is surrounded by moss-covered burial mounds. Reconstructed in the 1950s, it remains an active church, blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Few turf churches have survived in Iceland, making this a rare opportunity to see one. The church is not open to the public, so this will be a brief photo stop.
Fjadrargljufur Canyon - Fjaðrárgljúfur River Canyon
The river canyon at Fjadrargljufur is a stunning location, a winding green gorge about 100 meters deep and nearly two kilometers long. Fjadrargljufur gained fame after featuring in a Justin Bieber music video and is now popular with visitors worldwide. It’s an extraordinary natural environment, covered with delicate mosses. The canyon was formed thousands of years ago during a glacial period, leaving a winding river behind as the ice sheet retreated. We will spend an hour at this marvelous site.
Vik - Vik Village
The picturesque village of Vik is the southernmost point in Iceland. It has a fairytale charm, overlooked by a lovely church offering fantastic panoramic views. We’ll take you to this vantage point, where you can also see the Reynisdrangar and Dyrholaey from a different perspective. Vik is unique as an Icelandic seaside village without a harbor. In the summer, numerous seabirds, including Arctic terns, nest here.
Golden Circle + Kerid Crater Lake + Sky Lagoon experience | Overnight in Reykjavik
Thingvellir National Park - The day begins with a scenic drive from Reykjavik, heading towards the majestic Mount Esja and into Iceland’s heartland – Thingvellir National Park, a natural wonder without equal. Here, the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart, offering the unique opportunity to stand on two continents simultaneously.
Geologically fascinating, Thingvellir is also significant in Iceland’s cultural and historical life, as it was the site of the world’s oldest surviving Parliament, established by the Vikings in 930 AD. Laws were enacted, disputes settled, festivals held, and the Icelandic nation was governed from here for nearly a thousand years. Iceland declared its independence from Denmark here in 1944. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its rich cultural history and the stunning natural environment surrounding it.
Geysir - After experiencing Thingvellir, you will continue to the world-famous hot spring, Geysir. On the way, we will pass through the small village of Laugarvatn, located next to a beautiful lake of the same name in a geothermally active area called Haukadalur. The plumes of superheated vapor rising into the air here are used by locals to bake rye bread in the ground!
Known worldwide for its power and beauty, Geysir has become synonymous with this incredible natural display. Strokkur, another hot spring nearby, is very active, reliably erupting to heights of up to 30 meters every few minutes. You can get quite close to Strokkur, but it’s wise to check the wind direction first! Streams of superheated water flow all around, leaving intriguing colorful residues. While in the Geysir area, you will also have time to purchase lunch or snacks or shop for souvenirs at the nearby service station.
Gullfoss Waterfall - Gullfoss is a double-drop waterfall with a cascade of over 30 meters, creating endless sheets of spray as more than a million gallons of water crash down into a narrow canyon each minute. Gullfoss is a natural wonder at any time of the year. There are several viewing perspectives, depending on the time of your visit, allowing you to fully experience the thundering power of this magical waterfall.
It sets off countless rainbows on sunny days and is equally stunning when partially frozen in winter. It is now a protected site, having nearly been converted into a hydroelectric power plant a few decades ago.
Kerid Crater - These three amazing attractions complete the classic Golden Circle tour, but to add even more value and wonder to your experience, we will also stop at the dramatic red earth Kerid volcanic crater. Three thousand years old and over 50 meters deep, a walk around this crater and lake with its colorful mix of mossy greens and red earth hues is a visual highlight for you and your camera. Bjork once performed a concert here too.
Sky Lagoon - As we return to the city, there is one more extraordinary experience to come!
Icelanders love to bathe in geothermal hotpots, and now you can do the same at the Sky Lagoon!
This brand-new spa experience, located just outside Reykjavik, features an immense 250-foot-long heated infinity pool, a swim-up bar, and oceanfront views.
You’ll enjoy two heavenly hours indulging in luxury at Sky Lagoon – the perfect way to conclude your Golden Circle experience! During the booking process, you can select one of the two types of admission: Pure and Sky (CLICK HERE to see more details in the inclusions section).
Nowhere else can you witness so many natural wonders in one day. Rich in fascinating history and magnificent sights, this tour is your chance to experience Iceland at its finest.
