- Thingvellir National Park - The first destination of the day is Þingvellir National Park, where visitors can explore Thingvellir Lake, Iceland’s second-largest, and walk along a rift where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates converge.
This park is also renowned as the site of Althing, the world’s first parliament, established in 930 AD. The park’s name, Þingvellir (meaning “Fields of the Parliament”), is derived from this historical significance. If time permits, the guide will accompany visitors to the Öxarárfoss Waterfall, which cascades into the rift and merges with Thingvellir Lake.
- Efstidalur II - The next stop is Efstidalur Farm, where visitors can see Icelandic cattle and enjoy delicious locally made ice cream. This farm has been family-operated since 1750. Ice cream lovers can indulge in any flavor of their choice, compliments of the tour.
- Geysir - The journey continues to Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland’s second-largest waterfall. It is just a 5-minute walk from the parking area to the waterfall’s viewpoint.
During the summer, those who enjoy hiking can walk to the side of the waterfall, experiencing the vibrations and refreshing mist from the cascading waters.
At this stage, all three main attractions of the renowned Golden Circle route have been visited. However, the adventure doesn’t end here, as there is more to explore.
- Fridheimar - Friðheimar is a greenhouse in Iceland that specializes in cultivating tomatoes and cucumbers using geothermal energy. Located in Reykholt, it is a popular stop for tourists exploring the Golden Circle’s nearby attractions. Visitors can take a guided tour of the greenhouse, learn about geothermal farming’s history and techniques, and sample fresh tomato and cucumber products at the on-site restaurant. The restaurant offers a variety of delectable dishes featuring the greenhouse’s produce, such as tomato soup, pasta with tomato sauce, and Bloody Mary cocktails. Friðheimar provides a unique and educational experience, showcasing Iceland’s innovative use of renewable energy and sustainable farming practices.
- Kerid Crater - Kerid is a volcanic crater lake situated in southern Iceland, near Selfoss. It is part of the volcanic zone in Iceland’s southwestern region and is believed to have formed around 3,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption. The crater spans approximately 270 meters in width and 55 meters in depth, with a striking blue-green lake at its base. The red and orange hues of the crater’s walls contrast beautifully with the surrounding green moss and black volcanic rock, making it a popular tourist destination for its unique natural beauty. Visitors can walk along the crater’s rim for panoramic views or descend to the lake’s edge for a closer look. Kerid is a remarkable natural wonder that offers insight into Iceland’s captivating geological landscape.
