From Marathon Mishap to Na Pali Magic: A Surfer’s Journey on Kauai’s Coast
When a marathon threatened to derail our Na Pali Coast adventure, a quick call to the tour office saved the day. Join me as I recount the unexpected twists and turns that led to an unforgettable eco-friendly exploration of Kauai’s stunning coastline.
A Rocky Start Turned Golden
The day began with a bit of a hiccup. My wife and I, seasoned travelers and surfers, thought we had left our hotel in Poipu early enough to navigate the roads on the day of the marathon. But, as fate would have it, we found ourselves trapped in a sea of runners and spectators, realizing with a sinking heart that we were going to miss our 7:00 am boat trip. However, a quick call to the office and a chat with the ever-resourceful Cassidy turned our day around. She managed to get us on a noon tour instead, and I couldn’t have been more grateful. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures come from unexpected changes in plans.
Riding the Waves with Captain Chellen
The sun was shining, the water was a perfect shade of blue, and Captain Chellen was at the helm of our adventure. As a professional surfer, I have a deep appreciation for the ocean and its many moods, and Captain Chellen seemed to share that same connection. He expertly navigated us close to the towering mountain walls, dipping in and out of sea caves, and even through a waterfall. His stories of the Na Pali Coast were new to me, adding layers of history and mystery to the stunning landscape. And his Spotify playlist, aptly named chillinwithchellen, set the perfect backdrop for our journey.
Snorkeling and Snacks in Paradise
The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the snorkeling. Conditions were ideal, and we were lucky enough to have dolphins swimming alongside our boat. Kasey, another member of the crew, was a gem, pointing out fish and turtles from his vantage point on the boat. After our underwater exploration, we were treated to a simple yet satisfying snack of fresh pineapple, granola bars, and chips, with a choice of juice, soda, or water. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of adventure. As we headed back to shore, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the ocean, the crew, and the unforgettable experience they had provided. I knew I would be back, eager to explore more of the Na Pali Coast’s hidden treasures.
