Johannesburg holds the title as the largest city globally not situated near a coastline, lake, or river, leading it to be known as the largest ‘dry port’ in the world. Over half of the merchandise coming through the harbors of Durban and Cape Town is delivered to the City Deep container terminal. Although Johannesburg is over 120 years old, established on October 4, 1886, during the gold rush, it remains one of the world’s relatively younger major cities. Only Cairo, the busy Egyptian metropolis, surpasses Johannesburg in size on the African continent, rendering Johannesburg as the second largest city in Africa.
