Its narrow, winding lanes are lined with houses, temples, numerous handicraft shops, guesthouses, and restaurants. Entry is from the east, near Gopa Chowk, and involves passing through four massive gates on a zigzag path to the upper section. The final gate opens into Dashera Chowk, the fort’s central square.
- Jain Temples - Situated within the Jaisalmer Fort complex, the Jain Temples are among the oldest in Jaisalmer and are significant religious attractions. There are seven temples in total, constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries AD, each dedicated to different Jain tirthankars. The largest and most captivating is the Parsvanath Temple, with others including the Chandraprabhu, Rishabdev, Shitalnath, Kunthanath, and Shantinath Temples.
- Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli - This exquisite haveli is nestled in the heart of the town’s narrow lanes. It is a privately owned 19th-century haveli, renowned for its ornate exterior carvings and unique architecture.
- Kothari’s Patwaon-Ki-Haveli - The most prominent haveli is Patwa-ki-Haveli, which looms over a narrow lane with its intricate, honey-colored stonework resembling lace. Built between 1800 and 1860 by five Jain brothers who prospered in brocade and jewelry, it is divided into five sections. The first section, Kothari’s Patwa-ki-Haveli Museum, is privately owned and vividly depicts 19th-century life, making it the only section worth the entry fee. Other sections include two largely empty government-owned ‘museums’ and two private sections with shops.
- Gadsisar Sagar Lake - Located south of Jaisalmer city, Gadi Sagar Lake is a serene rainwater lake surrounded by numerous temples and holy shrines. The lake’s crystal-clear waters are ideal for boating and serve as the city’s water supply. It attracts many migratory birds, and a renowned Krishna temple is perched atop the yellow sandstone gate.
- Vyas Chhatri - The cenotaphs at Vyas Chhatri are among Jaisalmer’s most magnificent structures and a major tourist draw. Dedicated to Sage Vyas, the author of the epic Mahabharata, Vyas Chhatri features beautiful memorials and serves as a Brahmin cremation ground. The yellow sandstone cenotaphs are set on raised platforms, topped with intricately designed chhatris on finely chiseled pillars, exemplifying Rajasthani architecture. From its hilltop location, visitors can view the Golden Fort of Jaisalmer and enjoy stunning sunset vistas.
