- Kechries - Historically, Kenchreai was one of Corinth’s two ports. It facilitated eastern trade routes via the Saronic Gulf, while Lechaion on the Corinthian Gulf managed routes to Italy and Europe. Located on the eastern side of the Isthmus of Corinth, Kenchreai was a key junction for ships from the east and overland traffic between central Greece and the Peloponnese. Christianity reached Kenchreai early, with the Apostle Paul stopping there during his second missionary journey, as noted in Acts 18:18. Paul also mentions Kenchreai and a woman named Phoebe in his letter to the Romans.
Learn more about Ancient Corinth, the Isthmus, and the Canal on a private biblical tour from Athens or Nafplion.
- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Explore the remnants of Ancient Corinth, one of the largest cities in Ancient Greece. Walking through this ancient city feels like stepping back in time. For Christians, Corinth is significant due to the two letters of Saint Paul in the New Testament, First and Second Corinthians. It is also mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as part of Paul’s missionary journeys.
A combined ticket for Ancient Corinth is 8€ in summer or 4€ in winter (includes Museum entry).
- Archaeological Museum of Corinth - Visit the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth.
- Acrocorinth - The largest castle in the Peloponnese, showcasing architectural evidence of numerous invasions and offering stunning views of the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. The Acrocorinth castle closes at 4:00 pm.
- The Diolkos - The Diolkos provided a safer alternative to the perilous sea journey around the Peloponnese, known for its treacherous headlands, especially Cape Matapan and Cape Malea. In contrast, the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf offered more sheltered waters. The overland passage of the Isthmus, a narrow land strip 6.4 km (4.0 mi) wide, provided a shorter route to Athens for ships traveling to and from the Ionian coast of Greece.
The Diolkos also served a commercial purpose in transporting goods. Although little is known about its success in boosting trade, its long maintenance suggests a positive impact. During wartime, the Diolkos may have been used to transport lighter ships overland.
- Athens - Return to Athens via the highway.
- Acropolis - Sightseeing in Athens begins with Acropolis Hill, featuring the Dionysus and Herodion theaters, the Temple of Athena Nike, the monumental entrance (Propylaea), the Erechtheion, and the renowned Parthenon Temple, dedicated to the virgin goddess Athena.
Acropolis Hill tickets cost 15€ (1st Nov/31st March) and 30€ (1st April/30th Oct), including entry to the Erechtheion and Parthenon temples.
- Parthenon - Dedicated by the Athenians to Athena Parthenos, this temple is the most magnificent creation of Athenian democracy at its peak and the finest monument on Acropolis Hill.
- Erechtheion - This famous ancient Greek temple honors Athena and Poseidon, featuring a porch with six caryatids (female columns).
