Ujjain - Mahakal Darshan

Ujjain - Embark on a spiritual journey through the ancient and historic city of Ujjain, which boasts a rich history spanning 5000 years.

After a warm welcome at the pickup point in Indore, travel to Ujjain, covering a distance of approximately 55 kilometers in about 1.5 hours.

This city is home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, one of the seven cities that grant salvation, the Gadhkalika and Harsiddhi Shakti Peeths, and the sacred Kumbh Mela, which occurs in four cities across India. The cave of King Bhartari is located here, and it is believed that Ujjain bears the footprints of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Rama himself performed his father’s last rites in Ujjain, at a place now known as ‘RamGhat.’

Situated on the picturesque banks of the Kshipra River and the Malwa plateau, Ujjain is located at an elevation of 491.74 meters above sea level. The city enjoys a moderate climate, making it generally pleasant.

Shree Harsiddhi Mata Shaktipeeth Temple - Upon reaching Ujjain, check in at the hotel and freshen up. Later, visit the Harsiddhi Mata Mandir.
This temple, one of the 51 Shaktipeethas of the Goddess, is located near Rudra Sagar Lake in Ujjain. It ranks 13th among the 51 Shaktipeethas worldwide.

The idol of Harsiddhi Mata is painted in dark vermillion and is placed at the center, flanked by idols of Mahasaraswati and Mahalakshmi. The presence of the Shree Yantra, a symbol of Shakti representing the nine forms of Durga, is a key feature of the temple. Another striking feature is the two towering Deep Stambhas, a main pattern of the temple built during the Maratha period. During Navratri, hundreds of Diyas are lit, creating a magnificent and divine scene.

There is a small shrine of Goddess Mahamaya within the temple premises, which is closed to tourists. Here, a Diya has been burning for many years. An ancient well is also present on the premises, next to which stands a smaller temple dedicated to Karkateshwar Mahadev.

Bhartrihari Caves - After receiving blessings from the Harsiddhi Mata Shakti Peeth, proceed to the Bhartrihari caves.
After receiving blessings from Harsiddhi Mata, visit the Bhartrihari caves. These caves, dating back to the 11th century, are named after Bhartrihari, a learned man and the stepbrother of King Vikramaditya. It is said that Bhartrihari renounced worldly life and came here seeking peace to continue his meditation. Over time, these caves became his refuge.
Bhartrihari caves are a remarkable example of Indian rock-cut architecture. Nestled in a lush green forest and hilly area, the caves are narrow and completely dark. The stone-carved statue of Rishi Bhartrihari in a sitting posture is impressive. Inside the caves, you will find Mahadev’s trident and holy ash. Beautiful stone images are carved on the cave walls. The cave’s interior is extremely cool, peaceful, and spiritual.

Mangalnath Temple - After marveling at the rock-cut architecture of the Bhartrihari caves, visit the Mangalnath temple.

This temple is situated away from the city’s hustle and bustle and can be reached via a winding road. The temple overlooks a vast expanse of the Shipra waters, filling visitors with an indescribable sense of peace. According to the Matsya Purana, Mangalnath is regarded as the birthplace of Mars.

The Mangalnath Temple offers a serene and spiritual ambiance for visitors. The temple’s architecture features intricate carvings and sculptures. The main deity of the temple is Lord Mars, and devotees come here to seek blessings and offer prayers. The temple is also known for its astronomical significance, as it is believed to be the place where the prime meridian of Hindu geographers was established. It is considered an auspicious spot for observing celestial events and conducting astrological calculations.

Kal Bhairav Temple - After offering prayers at the Mangalnath Temple, proceed to the Kal Bhairav Temple.
Kal Bhairav Temple

The Kal Bhairav Temple is said to have been built by King Bhadrasen on the banks of the Shipra River. This ancient temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the chief among the eight Bhairavs. The temple’s striking feature is its exquisite paintings in the Malwa style, though only traces remain visible.

The Kal Bhairav Temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, and he is regarded as the guardian deity of the city. Although Ujjain is home to numerous temples, Kal Bhairav is the most prominent and attracts thousands of devotees daily. The worship of Ashta Bhairava is part of the Saivite tradition, and Kal Bhairav is considered their chief.

A unique feature of this temple is that liquor is offered to the main deity as ‘chadhava.’

Ram Ghat - After visiting the Kal Bhairav Temple, proceed to Ram Ghat.
The Land of the Gods, Ujjain, has been the source of mythological stories and many unforgettable tales. Although the ancient city has many places of interest and attractions, Ram Ghat has its own charm that is hard to find elsewhere in Ujjain.
Shri Ram Ghat is a riverbank on the banks of the Shipra River, where you can take a holy dip, perform rituals, and worship Lord Ram. It is a special place because Lord Ram himself stayed here with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman during their exile. He also performed a yagna (fire sacrifice) here.

Chintaman Ganesh Temple - After enjoying a splash at Ram Ghat, visit the Chintaman Ganesh Temple.
This temple of Lord Ganesha is located 6 kilometers from the Mahakaleshwar Temple. This ancient temple is known as Chintaman Ganesh. Three idols are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of this famous temple of Ganesha. The most notable feature of the Chintaman Ganesh temple is that Shri Ganesh is depicted in three forms: Chintman Ganesha, Ichhaman Ganesha, and Siddhivinayak. It is said that Chintaman Ganesh removes worries, Ichhaman fulfills desires, and Siddhivinayak grants Riddhi-Siddhi. It is also believed that such a unique and supernatural idol of Ganesha is found nowhere else in the country. According to beliefs, this temple was established by Lord Shriram himself.
The finely-carved stone pillars in the assembly hall and the white shrine define the temple’s age-old sanctity.

Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple - After offering prayers at the Chintaman Ganesh Temple, proceed to the Mahakaleshwar Temple.
This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is designed in Chalukya and Maratha styles and houses a Shiva Linga believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested).
Marble pathways lead to the chamber where the deity resides. The temple has three floors dedicated to Mahakalesvara, Omkaresvara, and Nagachandresvara, respectively. A small pond (Koti Tirtha Kund) is also present.
This temple holds both historical significance and spiritual importance, being one of the twelve Jyotirlingas designated by Hindu tradition.
The temple is renowned for its unique rituals and ceremonies. The Bhasma Aarti, performed every morning, is a significant highlight where the lingam is adorned with sacred ashes (bhasma) and a grand aarti (devotional lamp) is offered.

Mahakal Lok - In the evening, as the sun sets, Mahakal Lok becomes a spectacle with bright lights illuminating every detail of the corridor. Visit the Mahakal Lok corridor in the evening.
One of the major highlights of the corridor is its impressive length of around 920 meters, featuring approximately 200 statues, and it is spread along the Rudra Sagar Lake. There are eight forms of Lord Shiva for Darshan at the corridor. The corridor also showcases murals of stories mentioned in the Shiva Purana. There are 108 pillars and two grand entrance gates – Nandi Gate and Pinaki Gate. The corridor leads to the entrance of the famous Mahakaleshwar Temple and offers a mesmerizing panoramic view along the way. Ujjain Mahakal Lok Corridor houses the Swayambhu form of Lord Shiva. Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas in the world.

Sandipani Ashram - Located on the banks of the Kshipra River, Sandipani Ashram is a prominent attraction in Ujjain. This revered site commemorates Maharishi Sandipani, where it is believed he taught Shri Krishna, his friend Sudama, and Krishna’s brother Balram. The ashram now resembles a temple, featuring idols of Krishna, Balram, Sudama, and Guru Sandipani. Notably, there is a stone with numerals 1 to 100, thought to have been engraved by Guru Sandipani himself.

The ashram is home to several shrines, with the main one dedicated to Guru Sandipani. The Sarveshwar Mahadev Temple here houses a 6000-year-old Shivlinga with Shesnaag in its natural form, worshipped by Guru Sandipani and his disciples. The ashram also boasts a large stepped tank, the Gomati Kund, mentioned in the Puranas as the historical water source for the ashram. Nearby, an image of Nandi, dating back to the Shunga period, adds to the site’s historical significance.

Omkareshwar - Jyotirling Darshan

Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga - Today, after breakfast, check out from the hotel and proceed to Omkareshwar, covering a distance of approximately 145 kilometers in about 3.5 hours.
It can only be described as a blessing from the lords and mother nature that Omkareshwar, the sacred island, is shaped like Om - the holiest symbol of Hinduism. It is adorned with lofty hills, between which the river Narmada forms a serene pool.
A cantilever-type bridge spans the Narmada River. This 270-foot hanging bridge enhances the beauty of Omkareshwar. Omkareshwar epitomizes the age-old Hindu traditions and the timeless religious influence of Shiva on his devotees.
Located on the island of Mandhata, next to the banks of the Narmada River, Omkareshwar is a famous pilgrimage center that includes one of the 12 idolized Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva. It has two ancient shrines, Omkareshwar and Amarkareshwar. This holy place is located at the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri Rivers, making it a must-visit pilgrimage destination for Lord Shiva.

Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga - Upon reaching Omkareshwar, visit the Omkareshwar Jyotirling temple.
The temple features a large prayer hall supported by about 60 huge and elaborately carved stone pillars. It is a five-story structure, with each floor dedicated to a different deity. Above the Omkareshwar linga is the Mahakaleshwar temple. Sidhnath, Gupteshwar, and Dhwajeshwar temples are on the third, fourth, and fifth floors, respectively.
The temple also boasts several lofty spires.
There are two Shiva temples situated near each other, both of which are famous pilgrimage spots for devotees – Amareshwar Jyotirlinga on the mainland and Omkareshwar on an island.
Mandhata Island, on which Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated, is in the shape of the sacred Om (ॐ) symbol.

Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple - After paying respects to the Omkareshwar Jyotirling, proceed to the Mamleshwar temple.
Originally called Amreshwar Temple, Mamleshwar Temple is a sight to behold. Located on the southern bank of the Narmada River, Lingarchan Puja has been performed at this temple for years.
Maintained by ASI, the Mamleshwar temple is located in a beautiful ancient temple complex surrounded by small shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses, adorned with carvings and sculptures. The temple is spread over a smaller area that includes a hall and a sanctum. Around 1000 Shivalingas are placed on a wooden board for daily rituals. The temple walls are adorned with Mahimna Strotam inscriptions. Here, devotees are allowed to worship by touching the Jyotirlinga. The idol of Goddess Parvati is also present behind the Shivaling. A Nandi Mandap outside the main temple is worth noticing.

Omkareshwar - After taking Darshan of the deities, proceed to take a holy dip in the beautiful Narmada River.
Taking a holy dip in the sacred waters of the Narmada River is believed to cleanse one’s body and soul and bestow spiritual merit. Various rituals are performed on the riverbanks. Devotees offer prayers and make offerings to their ancestors, seeking their blessings and liberation.
