Temple of Karnak - Experience monumental ancient architecture at this Luxor landmark, featuring magnificent statues, columns, and the largest place of worship ever built—just a short distance from downtown traffic. The construction of Karnak Temple took over 1,000 years, showcasing diverse art and architecture at this Egyptian site.

Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The expansive Temple of Hatshepsut (at Deir el-Bahari) stands as one of the great funerary monuments of the ancient world, rivaling the Pyramids. Built into the towering cliff face that shelters the Valley of the Kings, it rises on three vast terraces connected by ramps, each level marked with a colonnade of stark, largely unadorned square pillars. Its namesake was one of the few female pharaohs of ancient Egypt, who fittingly called her monument “Splendor of Splendors.” However, much of the construction dates back to earlier rulers, starting with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC. Many sphinxes and other statues have since disappeared, making the structure appear even more monolithic. The cool stone interior offers relief from the intense heat of this region and features well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some in vibrant colors.
-
Valley of the Queens - Nestled in a Y-shaped ravine on the West Bank of the Nile, the Valley of the Queens is an ancient burial site for the wives of the reigning Pharaohs from the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties. The valley contains the tombs of royal wives and children from this era, as well as other tombs of royal family members, including princesses and princes. The most famous tomb at the site is that of Queen Nefertari, which is only occasionally open to visitors. Widely regarded as the finest in all of Egypt, the tomb of Nefertari has been fully restored but is often closed. Nefertari was one of the five wives of Ramses II, and the tomb he built for his favorite queen is a grand tribute to her beauty and a testament to his love for her. Among its ornate decorations are colorful scenes on its chamber walls and golden stars adorning the ceiling.
-
Colossi of Memnon - Little remains of the once impressive Amenhotep’s memorial temple. However, the two imposing statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, erected to guard the ancient entrance, still stand watch some 3,400 years later. Today, travelers can visit the shores of the Nile, just across from the city of Luxor, and marvel at the giant manmade sculptures. In addition to these impressive twin statues, travelers can see two smaller figures of the Pharaoh’s wife, Tiy, and mother, Mutemwia. Visitors can also get a close look at the sandstone panel carvings that depict images of the Nile god Hapy. Even though much of the Colossi has been lost to weather and time, travelers can still sense the wonder this site once held.
