Highlights
  • Huaihai Road Commercial Street - Meet your guide at the 2:00pm, and start your relaxing afternoon tea food tour from Huaihua Road, Shanghai. You will firstly try out some tasty mooncake at two local pastry shops. Mooncake is a typical pastry that Chinese people have during the Mid-autumn Festival, which is symbolized the reunion for the entire family like a harmonious circle.

Then you will sit down at a tea house next to the dessert shops to start your tea ceremony. China is with a long history of tea culture, and people here do believe that drinking tea keeps your doctor way. Have a taste of some green tea from Hangzhou as well as some black tea from Fujian province. Through the classic tea ceremony, you will get a better understanding of the functions of different size of the tea cups and the temperature of water to use for different tea leaves. You will also learn the original birth places for different tea as well as how tea culture has been changing the world since the Anglo-Chinese War in 1839.

Your final stop for the tour is at a Cantonese dessert restaurant where you will enjoy a different sweet flavor through various icy deserts, such as milk pudding with purple sticky rice, papaya, sago, mango puree and amazing almond tofu. By attending this tasty afternoon tea and desert tour, you surely will have a “sweet” memory from Shanghai.

A must try if you are a foodie - We went on this tour in March with my friend and I wholeheartedly recommend it. First we tried some local Shanghai dessert shops and bakeries with Jim and finished with tea tasting. All the while we talked about Chinese history and life in general, Jim really helped us bridge the gap between Chinese culture and ours.

Amazing treats and tea in Shanghai - We had an amazing time on our tour! Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. He took us all over, tasting delicious snacks along the way and educating us about the food, culture and history of Shanghai. We tried many desserts; fig tart, savory moon cake, Jewish cookies, cinnamon rolls, smoothies and more. We sampled a variety of wonderful fresh fruits from a neighborhood fruit vendor, including fresh squeezed pomegranate juice. And we sat for a lovely tea session at a local tea shop. We tried a wide variety of Chinese teas. We’ve always wanted to enjoy the tea at one of these iconic neighborhood tea shops! Overall, we had a wonderful time. We had a great chat and learned a lot about the city. And we tried a wide variety of home town favorites that we might have missed otherwise. Our guide also gave us great recommendations on what to check out during our stay in Shanghai. Definitely recommend!

One of our best tours! - We tried so many foods, bubble teas, new pastries, and a variety of teas in many different locations. Wish we did this tour first so that we could go to these places again and again. Jim was a great tour guide. He kept us excited and filled us with alot of wonderful tasting foods!

Learned so much! - My guide told me that this tour doesn't get much attention which is a shame because it was great! Visited several bakeries, My Tea Pink for a yummy bobo drink made with tea, walked around the Xintiandi area and also thru the old neighborhoods. In the old neighborhood stopped by a small traditional tea shop where I learned all about the various kinds of tea, how tea is fast becoming obsolete. Would definitely recommend this tour you will love it!

A great way to spend an afternoon - I had an excellent time with this tour and I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for something to do that's a little off the beaten path. The meeting place is by one of the more popular metro stations so finding it was no problem, even for someone with little understanding of Chinese. The first thing Jim asked was whether I had any dietary concerns and then we were on our way. We went to several places and tried several different kinds of desserts, and finished up with a traditional tea session. Jim was very knowledgeable about the foods and the places we were visiting, as well as the city in general. He was willing to answer any questions that I had, even the silly ones and we ended up having some very interesting discussions. Definitely the best part for me was the tea shop, it felt so quiet and relaxed compared to the bustle going on just a few streets away. If you're planning a trip to Shanghai and you have a few hours to spare, I can definitely recommend this tour, especially if you've seen some of the bigger tourist areas and are looking for a break from all that craziness. I'll definitely book another tour with this company the next time I end up in Shanghai!

Brilliant tour! :) - This was an excellent tour which I would highly recommend! Jim, our tour guide, was really friendly, fun and knowledgeable about local tea and desserts, and also Chinese culture. He provided us with lots of information but also took the time to ask us questions. We sampled some very delicious tea and cakes, I am vegetarian and can be quite a fussy eater at times but I honestly enjoyed everything that was offered and was very full after the tour! Jim asked us at the beginning of the tour if we had any dietary needs, thus making sure he knew about what we could eat and not eat. The places that we went to on the tour were really nice and the staff who worked there were really friendly and interested in us. I particularly liked that Jim took us places that we, as visitors to Shanghai, would never be able to find on our own. Now that we know about these bakeries etc, we will be sure to visit again. Visiting the traditional tea house was my personal highlight of the tour, it was very relaxing to sit and chat and to sample nice teas! The lady that worked there did not speak any English, however was very friendly and welcoming. I would love to visit her again. We had some really interesting discussions with Jim and he was able to give us lots of advice in regards to living in China, as we are non-Chinese and have recently moved here. I would 100% recommend this tour. We are keen to book more tours led by the Shanghai Foodie in the future!
