• Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum - Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園, Heiwa Kinen Kōen) is a significant landmark in the city. Visitors may easily come across this expansive park, covering over 120,000 square meters, even if they are not specifically looking for it. The park’s trees, lawns, and walking paths provide a stark contrast to the surrounding urban area.

Before the bombing, the current Peace Park area was the city’s political and commercial hub, which is why it was targeted. Four years after the bombing, it was decided that the area would be dedicated to peace memorial facilities rather than being redeveloped.

• Hiroshima Castle - Hiroshima Castle (広島城, Hiroshimajō), also known as the Carp Castle, exemplifies a castle built on a plain in the city center, unlike hilltop or mountaintop castles. The main keep is five stories high, and the grounds are encircled by a moat. Within the castle’s precincts are a shrine, some ruins, and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).

Hiroshima evolved as a castle town, with the castle serving as the city’s physical and economic center. Constructed in 1589 by the influential feudal lord Mori Terumoto, Hiroshima Castle was a vital seat of power in Western Japan. Although it escaped the fate of many other castles during the Meiji Restoration, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945, along with the rest of the city.

• Itsukushima Shrine - Miyajima (宮島) is a small island located less than an hour from Hiroshima. It is renowned for its large torii gate, which appears to float on the water at high tide, and is considered one of Japan’s top three views.

Although officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly known as Miyajima, meaning “shrine island” in Japanese, due to its association with Itsukushima Shrine. Like the torii gate, the shrine’s main buildings are constructed over water.

Miyajima is a romantic destination, best experienced by staying overnight at one of the island’s ryokan. While there are typically many day visitors, the area becomes much quieter and more serene in the evening. The island is also home to wild deer that are accustomed to humans. During the day, the deer roam the same sites as tourists, and at night, they rest along the walking paths.

• Tenshinkaku - Tenshinkaku (天心閣) is a traditional Japanese house-style café in Miyajima, situated on a hill. It offers a stunning view of Toyokuni Shrine, the five-story pagoda, and the Seto Inland Sea all at once.
