Exploring Higuey: A Family Adventure in the Dominican Republic
Eager to explore the Dominican Republic beyond the resort, I embarked on a cultural and culinary adventure in Higuey. With a small group and an exceptional guide, the day was filled with local insights, delicious food, and breathtaking views.
A Day of Adventure and Discovery
Our day began bright and early, with a 7:30 am pick-up that promised a full day of exploration and excitement. Our guide, Darwin, was a gem—friendly, knowledgeable, and fluent in English, which made our journey through the Dominican Republic both informative and enjoyable. As a family travel writer, I always appreciate a guide who can engage both adults and kids, and Darwin did just that.
The tour was intimate, with just four couples, including my husband and me. It was a perfect setting for making new friends while exploring the beautiful countryside. Our first adventure was a short horseback ride, a gentle introduction to the day’s activities. The ride was a simple 15-minute loop, perfect for those new to horseback riding. The views were stunning, and it was a great way to start the day.
Next, we headed to Higuey, where we got a taste of local life. We visited the basilica, a beautiful church that offered a moment of peace and reflection. The entry fee was just $1 per person, a small price for such a serene experience. We also explored a local market, bustling with fresh produce, spices, and meats. It was a sensory delight, and I couldn’t resist buying some fresh spices to bring a taste of the Dominican Republic back home.
Culinary Delights and Cultural Insights
Lunchtime was a highlight, with a freshly made buffet served along the picturesque Ana Mulla river. The setting was idyllic, and the food was a delicious spread of local favorites—white and yellow rice, beans, chicken, beef, sweet potatoes, and fresh fruit. It was a feast that left us all satisfied and ready for the next adventure.
After lunch, we visited a local home, a unique opportunity to see how the locals live and work. The family welcomed us warmly, offering a tour of their modest home and a taste of their homemade liquid chocolate. It was a fascinating insight into their entrepreneurial spirit, as they also produce and sell their own sugar, cocoa powder, and ground coffee. The freshness of their products was unmatched, and I couldn’t resist purchasing some to enjoy back home.
Our next stop was a local cigar factory, where we learned about the art of hand-rolling cigars. It was a hands-on experience, and we even got to roll our own small cigars. The factory also had large storage humidor rooms, filled with both flavored and regular cigars. It was an unexpected highlight of the tour, offering a glimpse into a craft that is both traditional and intricate.
Beach Bliss and Sweet Treats
Our final stop was Macao Beach, a stunning location with a breathtaking view of the cove and surrounding mountains. Although we only had about 20 minutes to enjoy the beach, it was a perfect way to end the day. The beauty of the landscape was a reminder of why the Dominican Republic is such a popular destination for beach lovers.
Throughout the tour, we were treated to delightful local snacks, including fresh-cut sugar cane and a sweet bean liquid dessert. These little treats added to the authenticity of the experience, making it a true taste of the Dominican Republic.
For families looking to step off the beaten path and truly experience the culture and beauty of the Dominican Republic, this tour is a must. Darwin, our guide, made the day unforgettable with his enthusiasm and expertise. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and lasting memories—a perfect family adventure.
