Chasing Waterfalls: A Day of Adventure in Guanacaste

When the waves are calm, and the surfboards are resting, it’s time to explore the hidden gems of Guanacaste Province. Join me as I dive into the refreshing waters of Llanos de Cortes and hike through the enchanting rainforest of Rio Celeste.

A Morning of Murky Waters and Hidden Gems

The day began with the sun barely peeking over the horizon, casting a golden glow on the sleepy town of Tamarindo. My wife and I were picked up by the friendly folks at Native’s Way, ready for a day of exploration and adventure. As we made our way to the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall, the previous night’s rain was still evident in the air, leaving a fresh, earthy scent that only added to the anticipation.

Upon arrival, the waterfall greeted us with its majestic presence, though the waters were a bit murky from the rain. It was a reminder of nature’s unpredictable beauty, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the raw, untamed energy of the falls. Our guide, Mariano, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing stories of the local flora and fauna as we explored the area. Despite the sediment-filled waters, the waterfall was still a sight to behold, and the surrounding lush greenery provided a serene backdrop for our morning adventure.

The Tranquil Beauty of Rio Celeste

Next on our itinerary was the Rio Celeste Waterfall, a place I’d heard whispers of from fellow travelers. The hike to the falls was a moderate challenge, weaving through the dense rainforest with the sound of exotic bird calls echoing around us. Our guide, Kevin, was attentive and informative, ensuring we were well-prepared for the trek ahead.

As we approached the waterfall, the sight was nothing short of breathtaking. The turquoise waters cascaded down the rugged cliff face, creating a scene that seemed almost otherworldly. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling the cool mist on my skin and the sheer power of the water as it crashed into the pool below. The 100-200 stairs leading down to the basin were a small price to pay for such a magnificent view, and the opportunity to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters was an experience I won’t soon forget.

A Taste of Costa Rican Culture

After our adventures in the rainforest, we were treated to a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant. The flavors were vibrant and hearty, a perfect reflection of the country’s rich culinary heritage. As we savored dishes like gallo pinto and plantains, I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the culture and the people who call this beautiful place home.

Our final stop was the Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary, where we had the chance to observe these fascinating creatures up close. The sanctuary was a peaceful haven, nestled within the verdant rainforest, and provided a fitting end to our day of exploration. As we made our way back to Tamarindo, I reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Guanacaste Province.

For those seeking a blend of adventure and tranquility, the Llanos de Cortes Adventure is a must-try. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a curious explorer, the beauty and serenity of this region will leave a lasting impression.
