Chasing Waterfalls: A Day of Adventure in Guanacaste
In search of a different kind of adventure, I ventured into the lush rainforests of Guanacaste Province to explore the hidden gem of Llanos de Cortes. Join me as I recount a day filled with breathtaking waterfalls, enchanting hikes, and heartwarming encounters with Costa Rica’s beloved wildlife.
A Hidden Gem in Guanacaste
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves and exploring the vibrant coastlines of Central America. But every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure, one that takes me away from the salty embrace of the ocean and into the lush embrace of the rainforest. That’s how I found myself on a journey to the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall in Guanacaste Province, a hidden gem that promised a day of swimming and exploring nature.
The day began with a refreshing coffee stop, a clever move by the tour company to streamline the pick-up process. As someone who usually dreads the endless hotel stops, this was a welcome change. With caffeine in hand, we were soon on our way to the first stop: the Llanos de Cortes Waterfall. Despite having driven past it multiple times in the past week, I had never noticed this secluded paradise. The sound of cascading water grew louder as we approached, and soon, the breathtaking sight of the waterfall came into view. Though the recent rains meant swimming was off the table, the sheer beauty of the falls was enough to make the trip worthwhile.
The Enchanting Rio Celeste
Next on the itinerary was the Rio Celeste Waterfall, nestled within the Tenorio Volcano National Park. The hike to the waterfall was a moderate challenge, but the anticipation of seeing the turquoise-hued waters kept my spirits high. Our guide, Daphne, was a true professional, ensuring our safety by keeping a respectful distance from the park’s more dangerous wildlife. Her knowledge of the local flora and fauna added depth to the experience, making the hike as educational as it was exhilarating.
Unfortunately, the heavy rains had also affected the Rio Celeste, cutting off access to the waterfall. But even from a distance, the sight of the vibrant blue waters was mesmerizing. It was a reminder of nature’s power and beauty, a theme that resonated throughout the day. As we made our way back, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such a unique natural phenomenon.
A Heartwarming Encounter at the Sloth Sanctuary
The final stop of the day was the Jungle Life Sloth Sanctuary, a place that promised a closer look at one of Costa Rica’s most beloved creatures. While the wildlife sightings were sparse, the sanctuary guide more than made up for it with his passion and expertise. His ability to capture the essence of the environment through photography was impressive, and his insights into the conservation efforts for sloths were both inspiring and eye-opening.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the experiences and the people I had met. The tour company, Native’s Way, had exceeded my expectations with their thoughtful organization and commitment to safety. It was a day well spent, away from the waves but still deeply connected to the natural world. For anyone looking to explore the hidden treasures of Guanacaste, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s a journey that promises adventure, education, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Costa Rica.
