Into the Heart of the Desert

The early morning air was crisp as we boarded our well-air-conditioned coach, ready to embark on a two-day adventure through the cinematic and cultural treasures of southern Tunisia. Our first stop was the awe-inspiring El Jem Colosseum, a marvel of ancient Roman architecture. As someone who has scaled the heights of mountains and cliffs, the climb to the top of the amphitheater was a thrilling challenge. We spent the night in a comfortable hotel, nestled in the heart of the oasis. The early wake-up call at 4 am was a small price to pay for the spectacle that awaited us. As we crossed the Chott El Fejaj, the sunrise painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, a breathtaking display of nature’s artistry. The dried Chott El Jerid, with its shimmering salt formations, was a surreal landscape that seemed to stretch into infinity. Our journey continued with a thrilling 4x4 ride through the sand dunes to Onk Jemal, the iconic Star Wars film set. On our return journey, we stopped in Gafsa for a delightful lunch before making our way to Kairouan. The city, with its grand mosques and vibrant medina, was a fitting conclusion to our adventure. As we made our way back to our hotel, I reflected on the incredible journey we had undertaken.
