Into the Heart of the Sahara

The Sahara Desert has always held a special allure for me, a vast expanse of golden dunes and endless horizons. As a wildlife photographer and a lover of Africa’s diverse landscapes, the opportunity to experience the Sahara was irresistible. The journey began in El Jem, where the ancient Roman colosseum stands as a testament to history’s grandeur. Walking through its colossal arches, I felt a connection to the past, imagining the spectacles that once took place within its walls.

Our guide, Hatem, was a remarkable companion, his knowledge of the region and its history enriching every moment. His kindness and attentiveness made the long drives feel like a shared adventure rather than a mere transit. As we ventured deeper into the desert, the landscape transformed, revealing the raw beauty of Tunisia’s diverse terrain.

The first night in the Sahara was a dream realized. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky exploded into a canvas of colors, and the cool sand beneath my feet was a welcome contrast to the day’s heat. Sand-surfing at sunset was exhilarating, a thrilling dance with the dunes that left me breathless and eager for more. The following day, we explored the iconic Star Wars filming locations in Matmata, a surreal experience that transported us to a galaxy far, far away. Our daughter, a budding photographer herself, was captivated by the scenes, her imagination ignited by the stories these places told.

The optional Landrover tour was a highlight, offering a different perspective of the desert’s majesty. The thrill of navigating the dunes in a 4x4 was matched only by the serenity of the oasis we discovered, a hidden gem amidst the arid landscape. The lush greenery and cascading waterfalls of Chebika were a refreshing contrast to the desert’s stark beauty, a reminder of nature’s resilience and diversity.

Throughout the journey, the reality of Tunisia’s challenges was apparent. The poverty and plastic pollution we encountered were sobering, a stark contrast to the pristine beauty of the resorts.
