Chasing Waterfalls and Volcanoes: A Day in La Fortuna
When the waves are calm, I seek adventure elsewhere. The Arenal Volcano Combo Tour promised a blend of nature and culture, and it delivered. From the invigorating swim at La Fortuna Waterfall to the warm hospitality of a local family, it was a day of discovery and delight.
A Refreshing Dip at La Fortuna Waterfall
The day began with a light hike through a lush public park, leading us down 500 steps to the base of the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall. As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves, the idea of a waterfall swim was a refreshing change of pace. The waterfall, standing at an impressive 65 feet, was a sight to behold. The water was invigoratingly cold at first, but as I acclimated, it became a rejuvenating experience. The force of the water pushed me back to the rocky shore, but there was a calmer area downstream where I could swim more leisurely or sit on the rocks, letting the gentle flow of water wash over me. We spent a good 35-40 minutes swimming and soaking in the natural beauty before making the climb back up the 500 steps. It was a highly recommended spot in La Fortuna, and I could see why.
A Taste of Costa Rican Hospitality
After our invigorating swim, we headed to a family-run outdoor restaurant nestled in the countryside. As a nomadic surfer, I’m no stranger to rustic dining experiences, but this was something special. The large picnic shelter bordered a serene river, providing a picturesque backdrop for our meal. The home-cooked lunch was a delightful surprise, prepared partially on a wood-burning stove. I opted for the fish, which was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The fresh-brewed coffee was a highlight, rich and aromatic, and the meal concluded with a scoop of creamy ice cream. As we dined, colorful birds flitted by the river, adding to the idyllic setting. It was more than just a meal; it was a glimpse into the heart of Costa Rican culture and hospitality.
Exploring the Arenal Volcano
The final leg of our adventure took us to the Arenal Volcano, where we embarked on a hike up the lava flow. Unfortunately, a road accident delayed our arrival, shortening our hike to a mere 0.8-mile round trip. While the hike itself was brief, our guide, Jorge, made it memorable with his engaging storytelling and keen eye for wildlife. He shared fascinating insights into the history of the volcano and pointed out various animals along the way. Though the hike was shorter than anticipated, it was still an interesting outing, offering a unique perspective on the volcanic landscape. As the day came to a close, I reflected on the diverse experiences we had, from the refreshing waterfall swim to the warm hospitality and the volcanic exploration. It was a day well spent in the heart of Costa Rica, a place that continues to captivate me with its natural beauty and vibrant culture.
