Chasing Clouds and History in Costa Rica’s Central Valley

Kicking off the new year with a journey through Costa Rica’s Central Valley was an adventure I couldn’t resist. From the foggy peaks of Irazú Volcano to the lush Orosi Valley and vibrant Lankester Gardens, this tour promised a day of discovery and delight.

A Volcanic Awakening

The first day of the new year found me in Costa Rica, ready to embark on the Central Valley Tour that promised a blend of nature, culture, and history. As a surfer, I’m used to chasing waves, but this time, I was chasing the clouds atop the Irazú Volcano. The tour kicked off at the crack of dawn, with a small group of fellow adventurers, and our guide Gary and bus operator Roy leading the way.

The ascent to the Irazú Volcano was a journey through mist and mystery. The fog was thick, and the clouds seemed to wrap around us like a cozy blanket. Gary, our guide, was a beacon of positivity, assuring us that the weather could change at any moment. And change it did. Just as our time at the peak was about to end, the clouds parted, revealing the majestic crater and its turquoise lagoon. It was a sight that made the early start and the chilly air worth every second.

A Stroll Through History

After the volcanic spectacle, we descended into the Orosi Valley, a place steeped in Costa Rican colonial history. The valley, with its lush green mountains and coffee plantations, felt like stepping back in time. As someone who spends most of his days by the ocean, the change of scenery was refreshing.

Gary’s knowledge of the area’s history was impressive. He painted vivid pictures of the past, from pirate attacks to the Franciscan orders’ influence. The Orosi Valley was more than just a pretty view; it was a tapestry of stories waiting to be told. We stopped at the Mirador de Orosi, where the panoramic views were as rich as the coffee grown in the valley. It was a moment of peace and reflection, a chance to connect with the land and its history.

Botanical Bliss

Our next stop was the Lankester Gardens, a haven for plant lovers. The gardens were a riot of colors, with orchids and bromeliads vying for attention. As a surfer, I’m more accustomed to the blues and greens of the ocean, but the vibrant hues of the gardens were a feast for the eyes.

The Japanese garden was a serene escape, a place to pause and soak in the tranquility. It was a reminder that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. Lunch at the Casona Del Cafetal was a delightful affair, with views of the Cachí Lake adding to the ambiance. The food was as rich and flavorful as the experiences of the day.

As the tour came to an end, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Central Valley Tour was a journey through the heart of Costa Rica, a blend of natural wonders and historical treasures. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that take you off the beaten path and into the clouds.
