A must do if you are in Arequipa - My husband and I had a great time doing the 3-day trek in the Cañon del Colca. Special kudos to our guide Ivan who was the kindest, most caring guide, and very patient with our slow pace on our ascent on the last day 😁 He was great company during the three days. A big thank you to our driver Jesus as well, who drove us safely to and back from the canyon. What you should expect: Day 1 You will be picked up from your hotel between 3:00 and 3:30 in the morning. Pack water and snacks in advance because you will only reach the breakfast place in Chivay at around 7:30 - 8:00 am. Wear warm layers as it is very cold in the morning, but you also need to be able to peel off layers as the day progresses because it gets quite hot when walking under the sun. I would also suggest to pack light for you comfort whilst hiking up and down the moutains, and to wear light but comfortable hiking shoes. Make sure you withdraw enough cash to buy water and snacks at the various stops, pay for the entrance to the canyon, the hot springs and to tip your guide and your driver at the end of the trip because these guys work hard and do an amazing job. After breakfast you will be driven to the start of the hike and you will start descending the canyon at around 09:00. The descent can be challenging at times because of the sun and because the slope is quite steep and it gets slippery with all the lose rocks and pebbles, but the guides will be there to ensure your safety. After walking down the mountain for 9km you will reach the first accommodation where you will have lunch, dinner, and stay for the night. The lodges are basic by western standards but comfortable enough and the hosts are lovely and very attentive. It gets very cold at night however, so make sure you have warm clothes to wear. The beds have alpaca wool blankets, so once you are under the covers it will be fine. Day 2 You will start the day at 7:00 after breakfast, and will climb to the village of Cosñirhua. The climb is very scenic and manageable. From Cosñirhua you will descend back to San Miguel. On the way down you may be able to buy water and snacks from one of the vendors who have small stalls on the way. When you arrive in San Miguel, you will be able to get your lunch and enjoy the pool of your lodge. My husband and I loved San Miguel, it is a little green paradise at the heart of the valley. The pool of our lodge was lovely, but make sure you jump in before 16:00 as after that time the sun does not hit the valley anymore and the water will get colder. The lodge in San Miguel was slightly more comfortable than the first stop, but do not freak out if you find spiders or even a little scorpion in your room: it is part of the experience 🤣 As long as you do not bother the little critters they will let you be. Day 3 We got up at 4:00 am to start our final ascent of the canyon at 4:30 am (go to bed early the night before!). The hike starts in pitch dark, so you will be more comfortable if you have a head lamp or a lamp torch. My husband and I managed with the torch on our phones however, so do not worry. Also make sure you have water and snacks as you will only be able to grab breakfast once you reach the top of the canyon. You can buy water and snacks at your accommodation in San Miguel if needed. The last hike on the third day is really quite challenging as you will climb 1.1km in altitude over a distance of 5km. If you are not a regular hiker, you will find it hard, especially considering the altitude. That being said, it is really a rewarding experience when you get to the top and see how far you have come. Our guide Ivan was great at making sure we were going at a somewhat comfortable pace and at encouraging us to keep climbing, he even sang us the Rocky song! Once everyone has made it to the top, you will walk 15-20 more minutes (on a flat area, thank God) to the breakfast spot. After that you will be driven to the hot springs which are a wonder for sore muscles. Then you will start the drive back to Arequipa and stop to have lunch, see the volcanoes and some insanely cute alpacas, lamas and vicuñas. You will reach Arequipa at around 17:00.

Perfection - I did the 3Day Colca Canyon Trek. I was a solo female, and I loved every second of it. Alex, our guide, was superb, couldn't have asked for better. He was informative and fun, and a highlight of the trek! We were lucky with a great group and great weather. Food and accommodation was ideal. Would definitely recommend.

Great hike - Excellent Colca hike. I am a medium average fitness person and the 3 day/2 night hike allowed me to walk into a nice pace, have plenty of rest stops and most importantly enjoy not only the physical challenge but also the Colca canyon views. The 2 day hike is definitely for fitted people, but in the end, people are really exhausted, so I am happy with my choice. Our guide Ivan was great, patient and caring, and always with us to ensure our safety. The only thing I would wish is to spend more time in the cultural part of the Colca. We didn't have time to stop even for pics in either Chivay or Yaque and see the ladies with the beautiful traditional dresses or visit any local churches. But great hike nevertheless!! Thanks!

Beautiful Colca Canyon hiking - Eric took great care of us. The canyon is absolutely beautiful. Please be aware that this is a very strenuous hike. Be capable of high altitude hiking with a very rocky terrain.
