Conquering Colca: A Trek Through Nature’s Majesty
Drawn by the promise of breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, I embarked on a two-day trek through Colca Canyon. This journey tested my endurance and rewarded me with unforgettable experiences.
Into the Heart of Colca Canyon
The allure of Colca Canyon had been calling to me for quite some time. As a biologist and environmental activist, the opportunity to explore one of the world’s deepest canyons, rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, was irresistible. The journey began in Arequipa, where I joined a group of fellow adventurers, all eager to embark on this two-day trek. Our guide, Carlos, was a beacon of enthusiasm and knowledge, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable experience.
The first day was a test of endurance and spirit. As we made our way to the Mirador Cruz del Condor, the sight of these majestic birds soaring against the backdrop of the canyon was a humbling reminder of nature’s grandeur. The trek was challenging, with steep inclines and the thin air of high altitudes testing our limits. Yet, the camaraderie among the group and the encouragement from Carlos kept us moving forward. Along the way, we encountered micro shops nestled in the mountains, offering a chance to replenish our water and energy with local snacks and bananas.
A Night in the Oasis
As the sun began to set, we arrived at our overnight accommodation in the Oasis de Sangalle. Contrary to my expectations of camping under the stars, we were welcomed into a basic yet comfortable room. The simplicity of the accommodation was a perfect complement to the natural beauty surrounding us. After a day of exertion, the chance to rest and recharge was a blessing.
The evening was spent sharing stories with fellow trekkers, each of us reflecting on the day’s journey and the challenges we had overcome. The sense of achievement was palpable, and as I lay in bed that night, I felt a deep connection to the land and its people. The canyon, with its rugged beauty and rich history, had left an indelible mark on my soul.
The Final Ascent and a Soothing Reward
The second day began before dawn, with a 4:30 am start. The climb ahead was daunting, with a 1000-meter elevation gain over 6-7 kilometers. My legs ached, and my lungs burned, but the promise of reaching the summit and the reward of the hot springs at Chacapi kept me going. The ascent was grueling, each step a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
Reaching the top was a moment of triumph, a culmination of physical and mental perseverance. The view from the summit was breathtaking, a panoramic vista of the canyon that stretched as far as the eye could see. The descent to the hot springs was a welcome relief, and as I soaked in the warm waters, the fatigue of the journey melted away.
The return journey through the canyon was a time for reflection. The landscape, with its dramatic cliffs and verdant valleys, was a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and humanity. As we made our way back to Puno, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my work as a conservationist. The Colca Canyon trek was more than just an adventure; it was a journey of discovery, a testament to the power of nature to inspire and transform.
