Embracing the Chill: A Journey Through Cabanaconde’s Colca Canyon
As the sun rises over the Andean peaks, Cabanaconde awakens to a crisp June morning, inviting adventurers to explore its breathtaking landscapes. The cool temperatures, ranging from 34.8°F in the early morning to a refreshing 51.0°F in the afternoon, create the perfect backdrop for a day of exploration. With layers of clothing to keep the chill at bay, travelers can embark on a journey through the majestic Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world.
Start your adventure with the Colca Canyon Tour as early as 3:00 AM, when the air is still and the skies are painted with the first light of dawn. The tour takes you through the heart of the canyon, where you’ll witness the awe-inspiring flight of the Andean condor, a symbol of freedom and grace. As you stand at the Mirador Cruz del Condor, the sight of these magnificent birds soaring above the canyon is a moment of pure magic.
“Visit to Colca Canyon - Although the 3 AM pick up was grueling, we were able to sleep in a fairly comfortable bus with recliner seats after we left the noise and bumps of Arequipa. The bus rose steadily to an elevation near 16,000 feet where we had a fantastic early morning view of the sunrise over some snow-capped mountains nearby. We continued with breakfast with some cultural dancers and music and then onto the main attraction, where we probably saw 20 condors gliding casually across the cliffs of Colca Canyon. One of these giant birds came within 10 feet of our position at the edge of the cliff and several flew directly overhead. We made several other stops to see some of the cultural history of the canyon. All in all, a long day, but well worth it.” - Reviewed on 2025-05-17
The tour also offers a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region, with stops at traditional towns like Yanque, where the “Wititi” dance, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is performed. The journey through the canyon is not just about the landscapes but also about connecting with the Andean way of life.
Discovering Andean Culture and Gastronomy
As the day progresses, the cloud cover decreases, revealing clear skies that stretch across the horizon. This is the perfect time to delve deeper into the cultural and culinary delights of the Colca Valley. The Andean Lifestyle Tour offers an immersive experience, taking you through local homes and introducing you to the traditional ways of life in the Andes.
The tour includes a visit to the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, where the vicuñas, graceful relatives of the llama, roam freely. The reserve is a testament to the region’s commitment to wildlife conservation, a theme that resonates deeply with those who cherish the natural world.
Lunch in Chivay is a highlight, where you can savor dishes made from high Andean products. The flavors are as vibrant as the landscapes, offering a taste of the region’s rich culinary heritage. As you dine, the stories of the Andean people come to life, adding depth to your understanding of this remarkable place.
Relaxation and Reflection in the Thermal Pools
As the sun begins its descent, casting a golden glow over the canyon, it’s time to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. The hot springs of Chacapi offer a soothing retreat, where the thermal waters provide a natural remedy for tired muscles. The Colca Canyon Tour includes a visit to these springs, allowing you to soak in the healing properties of the water while surrounded by the serene beauty of the canyon.
The day concludes with a panoramic view from Patahuasi, where the stone forests and curious rock formations stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. As you gaze upon the majestic Misti and Chachani volcanoes, the sense of wonder and connection to the natural world is palpable.
Cabanaconde’s June chill, with its cool temperatures and clear skies, offers a unique opportunity to embrace the beauty of the Andes.
