Highlights
  • Brussels - As you might not know Belgium is not only famous for its waffles, beers and chocolate but also for being the cradle of the 9th Art : comics. Never heard of Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Astérix, … ? To commemorate the link between Belgium and comics, 50ish murals have been painted throughout Brussels since the 90’s.

So together we will discover Brussels’ center throughout the visit of some of those comics murals. I will give you some explanations on them and will answer your questions if you are curious on the subject. Of course there will be many other points of attention along the way like buildings, squares, and some street art.

Don’t expect to see all the comics murals (would require all day). It’s not a historical tour, others do that better than I could. The point of this experience is to discover a part of Belgian comics culture/history and to show you -through a selection of comics murals- some streets and neighborhoods you probably would not have visited on your own…

Additional Information

Perhaps you’re unaware that Belgium is renowned not just for its waffles, beers and chocolate, but also as the birthplace of the 9th Art: comics, or ‘bande dessinée -BD’ as they’re called in French. Tintin, The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Astérix - do these names ring a bell? These comics have inspired around 50 murals that have been emblazoned over Brussels’ central city since the 1990s, with a few more in the outskirts.

Join me as we roam Brussels’ city center, exploring these comic-inspired wall art. I’ll be providing brief context of each mural and satiating any queries you might have on the topic. Naturally, there will be numerous other sights to behold along our journey, including buildings, city squares, and other forms of street art. If you’re interested, I could also share my personal insights and recommendations for future visits, such as bars, restaurants, museums, and so forth.

Unique Part of Brussels' Culture - Cédric was great. His passion for comics was a unique lens through which to learn about Brussels...and he included historical facts along the way too. Small group tours are so much better than big groups, but they are really memorable when your guide expands your experience of a place. On a side note, while new to this platform, you can see many more reviews if you pop over to airbnb and look up the same tour...seeing that helped us decide to take a chance on this, and I am glad we did.

Unique tour with a knowledgeable guide - Cedric is a very knowledgeable guide about all things comic books and the local area. Even though it was raining hard to start, we had a wonderful tour. We were familiar with a few of the Belgian comics and learned a lot about them and new ones. Our 9 and 11 year olds also enjoyed the tour. We highly recommend this tour for a unique way to see Brussels.

One of the Coolest Walking Tours I've Ever Been On!! - This was one of the coolest walking tours I've ever been on! Cedric was an excellent guide! He brought us to many comic book murals and discussed the comics, the artists, the impact on Belgian culture, etc. He brought comics along to use during his discussion and used pictures and video to supplement as well. But he also shared cool architecture, historical sites, political sites and natural sites. So, in no means was it just about comics. It was just a really cool lens to view Brussels through. I highly recommend!!

Better than we expected! - This was an awesome tour! The murals are amazing and we were able to see parts of Brussels away from the touristy area. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the comics and threw in a little history of Brussels. If you are into comics, this is the tour for you. Brussels comics creators made historical changes in the way comics were presented. Brussels is such a great place with so many hidden gems and such wonderful people.
