Sailing with Sea Turtles: A Barbados Adventure
Drawn by the allure of snorkeling with sea turtles, I set sail on the El Tigre catamaran in Barbados. Join me as I recount a day filled with oceanic wonders, vibrant marine life, and the simple joys of island living.
Setting Sail on the El Tigre
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the marina in Bridgetown, ready to embark on a new adventure. The El Tigre catamaran awaited, its sails gently flapping in the morning breeze. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but the promise of snorkeling with sea turtles in the crystal-clear waters of Barbados was too enticing to resist.
The crew welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a friendly demeanor that immediately set the tone for the day. Maureen, affectionately known as the Ottawa Mother Bear, was already at the bar, mixing up rum drinks and serving Hairoun beer to eager passengers. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, a perfect start to what promised to be an unforgettable journey.
As we pulled away from the marina, the coastline of Barbados stretched out before us, a picturesque backdrop to our adventure. The gentle sway of the catamaran and the refreshing sea breeze on my face reminded me of why I love island life so much. With a drink in hand and the open sea ahead, I felt a sense of freedom and excitement that only the ocean can provide.
A Dance with Sea Turtles
Our first stop was the much-anticipated turtle swim. Having experienced a less-than-stellar turtle encounter in Sint Maarten, I was eager to see what Barbados had to offer. As we anchored in the turquoise waters, the crew began to feed the turtles, and like clockwork, two magnificent creatures appeared, gliding gracefully beneath us.
The sight was mesmerizing. The turtles moved with an elegance that seemed almost choreographed, their shells glistening in the sunlight. I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to these gentle giants, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that the ocean holds. Below us, stingrays gathered on the sandy floor, adding to the magical scene.
Tulie and Malie, our guides in the water, ensured that everyone had a chance to experience the turtles up close. Their enthusiasm and knowledge of the marine life made the experience even more enriching. As I floated above the vibrant underwater world, I felt a sense of peace and awe that only the ocean can inspire.
Exploring the Shipwreck and Sandy Lane
Our next destination was an old sugar barge, now a thriving artificial reef teeming with life. As we snorkeled above the wreck, the water came alive with colorful fish, darting and swirling around us. It was a scene straight out of a nature documentary, and I couldn’t help but feel a thrill of excitement as I explored this underwater paradise.
After the exhilarating snorkeling session, we anchored in front of the stunning Sandy Lane hotel. The crew served a delicious lunch of barbecue chicken, fried flying fish, and other local delicacies. The flavors were as vibrant as the surroundings, a true taste of the Caribbean.
With our bellies full, we swam to the nearby beach, the water so clear it felt like swimming in liquid glass. The afternoon was spent diving off the catamaran’s bow, laughter and joy echoing across the water. It was a day of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple pleasures that island life offers.
As we sailed back to the marina, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the ocean. The memories of the day lingered in my mind, a testament to the magic of Barbados and the adventures that await those who seek them. Whether you’re a seasoned ocean lover or a first-time snorkeler, the Barbados Catamaran Cruise is an experience not to be missed.
