Bergen is often associated with Bryggen, the fish market, and the funicular. However, there’s so much more to explore in this historically rich and charmingly secretive city. One of its hidden gems is Nordnes, centrally located yet unknown to many.
During our tour, we’ll dive into the lifestyle and trade history of Norwegians in Bergen by visiting a range of homes from the rich merchant to the humble sailor. The grandeur of merchant houses still standing today is evident, even though fires and wars have morphed Nordnes into an architectural potpourri. Nevertheless, one can find preserved 17th-century streets tucked away behind 1950s-style apartment buildings.
But Nordnes’s appeal is not restricted to just its historical value - it also hosts some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city, perfect to take a break from the hustle and bustle and live like a local. We will also talk about Bergen simplitudes, like our daily routine, and why owning a car is not a common practice.
To avoid any interference with local activities, we limit our group sizes to ensure a respectful exploration of the quaint lanes of this neighborhood.
