Highlights
  • Falls Road - The area surrounding Falls Road is known as the “Gaeltacht” area, where some locals speak the Irish language and is a sign of the Irish culture they wish to preserve. During our tour of this area, we will witness visible signs of the desire of this community to be part of the Republic of Ireland.

We will visit the International Wall, the Bobby Sands mural, the Remembraza Garden of the volunteers of the local IRA and Bombay Street, where the problem exploded in 1969.

  • Shankill Road - Then we will pass through the electronically controlled gates that divide the two communities known locally as “Check Point Charlie” and walk across the Wall to Shankill Road, where you will demonstrate the determination of the locals who wish to remain part of the United Kingdom.

You will have the opportunity to sign the Wall of Peace - if you wish - and leave your message next to Bill Clinton’s and the Dalai Lama’s. On this side of the wall we will visit several murals that commemorate the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force), the Garden of Remembrance and bombing places where lives were lost.

With a deep knowledge of both communities, your guide will share with you the shock lived during this time and the steps that led to peace in Northern Ireland, as well as the hopes and dreams of local communities for the future.

Additional Information

Belfast, albeit lesser known, remains a city of divisions today. A tangible wall of about 25 kilometers is all that divides two neighbouring religious communities. For over three decades, an infamous era known as ‘The Troubles’ has left a deep impression on the city and its inhabitants. It is rare to find someone who hasn’t experienced turmoil or disorder in this region.

From this political rebellion, a unique tradition has risen where both communities express their narratives, political beliefs, and culture through neighbourhood murals.

On foot, examine closely both ends of the Peace Wall and the globally renowned murals of Belfast - a city that has gained recognition as the largest open-air art exhibition on the planet - while uncovering the tales they tell.
