- Lama Temple (Yonghegong) - Meet your guide in the morning or afternoon at your hotel, then take a cab or subway (at your own expense) to the Lama Temple, the largest and best-preserved lamasery in Beijing. Built in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it originally served as the residence of Emperor Yongzheng (the third emperor of the Qing Dynasty) before he ascended the throne. In 1744, the residence was fully converted into a lamasery. At the Lama Temple, you will participate in a brief Monk Blessing Ceremony. This ceremony, also known as enlightenment, is held when a new Buddha statue or painting is placed in the temple or when believers invite a Buddha statue for worship. Monks are invited to chant and bless during the ceremony. Nowadays, the blessings of a Buddhist monk are believed to bring a long, healthy, and peaceful life. You will receive a string of beads or a bracelet from your tour guide. Follow your guide to a blessing room and present the bracelet to the eminent monk. Others may have amulets, Buddha statues, etc. As the ceremony begins and the monks chant, you will experience inner peace. - Temple of Confucius and Guozijian Museum - Next, walk through a picturesque street to visit the Temple of Confucius and the Imperial College. The Temple of Confucius is the largest and most renowned temple dedicated to Confucius in East Asia. Built in 1302, it has been greatly expanded over the years and now occupies a 20,000 sq m (215,278 sq ft) site. - Guo Zi Jian (The Imperial College) - Continue to the Imperial College, located next to the Confucius Temple within the same grounds. Established in 1306, it served as the supreme administrative headquarters for education and the highest seat of learning during the Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Guozijian is the only imperial college from ancient times that has been preserved to this day. - Wudaoying Hutong - Conclude your tour by exploring the old Beijing culture at Wudaoying Hutong. This renovated hutong blends traditional hutong charm with chic Western stores, offering various Western comforts, from coffee and fast food to fine dining. Your guide will share the history and interesting stories about this authentic Beijing neighborhood along the way. Your tour ends here, and your guide can assist you in finding a taxi home or directing you to the subway station.
