There are clear indications that new architectural styles were still being developed at the site during its construction. The iconography reflects both Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, as well as the king’s supremacy, themes also present in his other temples. However, the depictions of individual deities and their arrangements are often unique to Banteay Chhmar.

The name is believed to mean ‘Fortress of the Army’ and it was constructed during the same period as the Banteay Chhmar temple complex. It is thought to have been built as a tribute to the Khmer army for their victory over the Cham army, leading to Khmer control of the region.
