- Simanjiro - After an early pick up in Arusha, you will travel about 60 kilometers to the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, just south of the Kilimanjaro international airport all the way to the Mererani area. This is the prime location where the Tanzanite mineral was discovered and the only place where you can find in the whole wide world. This precious stone is found about 1000 meters deep underground, on a volcanic igneous rock. You will descend down the mine to explore how the mining process takes place, as you explore the machinery and spend time with the miners on site. This is a full day activity with departures from Arusha town.

Mererani Tanzanite Mines
These mines are situated in the Merelani Hills within the Manyara Region of northern Tanzania, 70 km (43 mi) south from Arusha. This is the origin of the discovery of blue Tanzanite in 1968, and it continues to be actively mined by both local and major mining companies till date.

Tanzanite Mining Experience - Getting to the Tanzanite mines, is an Indiana Jones experience. The mines were an educational and one of my highlights of Tanzania. The guides were helpful and provided a great African homemade meal. My only glitch was the paperwork required to get entry, was inadequate, and we had to get additional entry documentation. If you like something different, and adventurous, I highly recommend this experience.
