Arusha – Momella Gate 1500 m – Miriakamba Hut 2500

Momella Lakes - Begin your journey from Momella Gate (1,500 m) in the late morning. The trail quickly traverses open grasslands, offering opportunities for game viewing where you might spot buffalo, warthogs, elephants, and more. The path then ascends gently through montane forest. Lunch is enjoyed at the famous “Fig Tree.” Post-lunch, the trek continues through a less dense forest, home to numerous birds and monkeys, including the black and white Colobus. By mid-afternoon, you’ll get your first close-up views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), set in a picturesque grassy glade, is reached in time to bask in the late afternoon sun and take in the pleasant views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro. The hike takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, with an ascent of 1,014 m.

Miriakamba Hut 2,500 m – Saddle Hut 3,500 m

Miriakamba Hut - The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short but steep and continuous ascent. Starting through attractive, open, and lush montane forest, the trail continues past the halfway point of Elephant Ridge and climbs uphill through large heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut for lunch. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. For the energetic, a short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru offers excellent views just before sunset. The hike takes about 3 to 5 hours, with an ascent of 1,056 m. Saddle Hut is similar to Miriakamba, but water is collected from a stream about 10 minutes away. The trail is slightly exposed as it traverses the rocky ridge, offering fine views across into Kenya and the Maasai Hills. The summit is reached in 5 to 6 hours.

Saddle Hut 3500 m – Meru Summit Socialist Peak 4,566 m – Miriakamba 2,500 m

Mount Meru - An early start around 0200 hrs is required to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m). The trail continues along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4,350 m) around sunrise. The views are breathtaking: the cliffs of the crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, and the valley if the weather is clear. The summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is an hour further along a spectacular but often steep path. The return route to Rhino Point in the sharp morning light along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa.

A quick descent through open grassland and mixed forest offers good chances of seeing wildlife. This trail provides excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the park. Momella Gate is reached by late morning. The descent takes about 2 to 3 hours, with a descent of 1,014 m.
