Best Part of Our Guatemala Trip - You pay for what you get but in this case, I think it’s fair to say that they more than delivered! My girlfriend and I agreed that the overnight hike was the highlight of our Guatemala vacation and Axel, our tour guide, kept up an incredible energy the entire time (and had an awesome playlist to hike to). Food and accommodations were more than adequate and the views, well, just see for yourself.

Fantastic! - A great experience richer through these two days. Climb Acatenango and Fuego with a group of people led by a specialized team. Axel is made for this job, takes everyone into account and ensures tour where no one is short of anything.

Challenging but Unforgettable Acatenango Experience - I did the overnight Acatenango hike with Ox Expeditions and was really impressed with how well organised everything was. The welcome briefing the night before is absolutely essential—it gives you a clear idea of what to expect and how demanding the hike truly is. One thing I really appreciated was that they offer lots of warm clothing to hire for free, which meant I didn’t have to pack bulky layers in my own bag. I would strongly recommend hiring a porter for the ascent (for an additional charge). The hike is steep, long and genuinely difficult, and having someone carry your main bag makes a huge difference. Be prepared for very cold temperatures at base camp. Food is provided and perfectly fine for the conditions, but the campsite itself is very basic. It’s also worth knowing that you’re not guaranteed dramatic views or a clear sight of Fuego erupting—weather and cloud cover can change quickly. Even so, the experience is absolutely worth it. Reaching the top and spending the night on the volcano is something I’ll never forget.

Great experience - Had a wonderful experience with Axel, Jacob, Misael and Jose! Excellent guides, kind, patient and compassionate. In the busy season they offer two different base camps. We were on the second. Pros: •the hike was a bit shorter and takes a beautiful new path thru an old growth forest with one of the oldest trees on the volcano. The cabins are nicer than the other base camp. Cons: • the cabins don’t face the volcano for night time viewing of eruptions. But are warmer and more spacious than other base camp. •no platform to sit on for viewing and fire area could use some TLC. Things to note if going in the busy season: The orientation (night before) for the two base camps is at different times than what is listed on website. We missed our orientation because of this.

Definitely recommend this tour! - We had a great experience with ox tour. The tour is not the cheapest, but worth the money. Perfect preparation with the very clear briefing the day before and the opportunity to rent equipment. Always time for questions. The tour itself was beautiful, although tough, but totally worth it. Basecamp was comfortable and food was good. The tour guides made our experience complete; they were thoughtful (keeping an eye on everyone with a good pace, but not too slow), funny and overall a nice ambience. We felt very safe. Thank you so much Romeo, Rolando, Nery and Pewis. An experience of a lifetime.

Think twice before booking - It’s hard to give a bad grade: the fact that you’re so close to an active volcano is such a once-in-a-lifetime experience that it makes almost everything forget. We had a very good guide with Liam. However, the company OX I personally would not recommend to anyone. Unprofessional beginner mistakes: - Forgetting blankets, so we were so cold at night with just our sleeping bag that that is why several skipped the morning walk to the top of the Acetenango. This could have been compensated by not (or less) charging for the Fuego walk. However, they have not even apologized. - After asking twice if my dietary needs were not a problem, because I like to take care of something myself if it is annoying, I assumed that this would be okay: that lasted until lunch.. "I'm very sorry, we'll get back to that tomorrow in the office, we'll find out where this went wrong". Of course I haven't heard anything more about it. Deliberately opting for a better and more expensive provider, I received a message 2 days before departure that we would not be staying in a cabin, but in a large tent with cots. An upgrade was called it. We could cancel if we didn't want to. However, there is a reason that we all booked early, because the other reputable providers no longer have a place. In short, with your back against the wall. Unlike many others, the tent camp had no direct view of the Fuego. Only one didn't have their own toilet, we had to go to a camp next door. And didn't have a single chair or table to sit and/or eat, unlike all the other campsites I've seen! I've paid 100, but I've talked to people who've gotten 50 more. The Fuego hike is also exceptionally expensive at OX, friends have paid less for that too.. I don't like to write negative reviews, but it's important that people are prepared. I gave them the opportunity to meet me/us; financially or with an apology.
