From Waves to Trails: Discovering Antigua’s Scenic Hikes
Trading my surfboard for hiking boots, I embarked on the Antigua Trek, a journey that promised scenic views and a taste of the island’s rich history. Join me as I explore Fort George and beyond, discovering the beauty of Antigua from a new perspective.
Setting Foot on Antigua’s Trails
Every year, when the waves are calm and the sun is shining, I find myself drawn back to the enchanting shores of Antigua. This year, I decided to swap my surfboard for hiking boots and explore the island from a different perspective. The Antigua Trek was calling my name, promising an active adventure through the island’s most scenic spots.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by Rick, our guide for the day, who picked us up from our hotel. The drive was short, but the anticipation was palpable. We were headed to Fort George, a historic site perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the island. The trek was classified as a Mango hike, perfect for those with a medium fitness level, and I was eager to see what lay ahead.
Climbing to Fort George
The trail to Fort George was a delightful challenge, with dirt paths winding through lush greenery. As a former professional surfer, I’m no stranger to physical exertion, but this hike was a refreshing change of pace. The climb was invigorating, and the views that unfolded with each step were nothing short of breathtaking.
Rick, our guide, was a fountain of knowledge, pointing out landmarks and sharing stories of Antigua’s rich history. From the top of the fort, we were treated to a sweeping vista of Falmouth Harbour, with its sparkling waters and bustling marinas. To the east, English Harbour and Shirley Heights beckoned, while the northern view revealed the island’s expanse, dotted with familiar landmarks like the airport and St. Johns.
A Leisurely Descent
After soaking in the views and capturing a few photos, we began our descent. The pace was relaxed, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty surrounding us. Rick’s son joined us for the journey down, adding a personal touch to the experience. We chatted about island life, the joys of exploration, and the simple pleasures of a morning hike.
As we made our way back to the hotel, I couldn’t help but reflect on the morning’s adventure. The Antigua Trek had offered a unique glimpse into the island’s heart, far removed from the usual tourist spots. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best way to experience a place is to immerse yourself in its landscapes, one step at a time. I left with a renewed appreciation for Antigua’s natural beauty and a promise to return for more adventures.
