• Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are the most remarkable ancient remains in Alexandria, dating back to the 2nd century AD. Excavation began in 1892, and the catacombs were discovered by chance eight years later when a donkey fell through a chamber ceiling. A long spiral staircase leads to the main hall, running down the outside of a shaft used by excavators to transport the deceased. The staircase leads to three floors showcasing an extraordinary blend of ancient Egyptian and Greco-Roman art. At the same site, visitors can also see other tombs that have been entirely relocated to Kom el Shoqafa.
• Pompey’s Pillar - Pompey’s Pillar, also known as the Serapium Oracle, is Alexandria’s most renowned tourist attraction, though it may not meet expectations. It is simply a granite pillar, albeit a towering 88 feet high, situated on a hill surrounded by ruins. The Crusaders mistakenly named it after Pompey (106—48 BC). In reality, it dates to the 3rd century AD, erected in honor of Emperor Diocletian on the site of a Ptolemaic temple to Serapis. Informative signs on the ruins label each nearly empty spot as a “pool” or “bath,” which to the untrained eye appear as indistinct rocks. The late-model sphinxes on pedestals add some character. Ironically, the most intriguing aspect is the view from the hill, offering a glimpse inside the adjacent walled cemetery and a bustling market street. & Corner of Amoud El Sawary.
• Lighthouse of Alexandria - Visit the magnificent Fort of Qaitbay, also known as the Citadel of Qaitbay, constructed in 1479 AD. It was built to protect and fortify Egypt’s northern shores from Crusader attacks. This fortress stands on the ruins of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, offering the best views of Alexandria and the freshest air.
• Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi - The Al-Mursi Abu Al-Abbas Mosque, built in the Andalusian style, is distinguished by its domes and numerous columns supporting the roof. The tall minaret, along with the arabesque and mosaic works in the windows and doors, and the ornate mihrab elevated from the minbar, are all evident inside the mosque. It contains 16 marble and granite columns, each a single octagonal piece ending with a crown about eight meters high, with four columns of traction. It is the main mosque of Alexandria, designed by Italian engineer Mario Rossy.
• Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The Library of Alexandria, also known as Bibliotheca Alexandrina, was one of the greatest classical institutions. Replacing it might seem a Herculean task, but the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina achieves this with great success. Opened in 2002, this impressive modern architectural piece aims to revive the brilliance of the original center of learning and culture. The complex has become one of Egypt’s major cultural venues, hosting numerous international performers and housing a collection of outstanding museums.
