Agra - Taj Mahal & Beyond
Mehtab Bagh - Begin your day early with a visit to the opposite bank of the Yamuna River, where you will be captivated by a unique view of the Taj Mahal, with the river’s waters between you and the monument.
The gardens of Mehtab Bagh, or Moonlit Gardens, are perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal on the north bank of the Yamuna, offering panoramic views of the Taj Mahal at various times of the day.
Mehtab Bagh, located on the north bank of the Yamuna opposite the Taj Mahal, was the last of the eleven Mughal-built gardens in the Char Bagh style.
Agra Fort - Agra Fort, also known as the Red Fort of Agra, is a well-preserved massive fort complex that served as the main residence of Mughal Emperors until 1638, when the capital moved from Agra to Delhi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains numerous palaces built by different rulers. Akbar Mahal, Jahangiri Mahal, Palace of Roshan Ara, Diwan-E-Am, Diwan-e-Khas, and Moti Masjid are the main architectural highlights within the fort complex. However, the most notable site is the Mutthamman Burz or Shahjahani Mahal, where Emperor Shah Jahan, the creator of the Taj Mahal, was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, allowing him views of the Taj Mahal. Today, similar uninterrupted views can still be enjoyed.
Fatehpur Sikri - After exploring Agra beyond the Taj Mahal, return to your hotel for breakfast. Following breakfast, drive to Fatehpur Sikri, the former Mughal capital located approximately 38 km west of Agra. The walled city contains imperial buildings and palaces, including architectural masterpieces like Diwan-E-Khas, Diwan-E-Am, Panch Mahal, Anup Talao, Treasury, Astrologer’s Seat, Jahangiri Mahal, and Buland Darwaza. A white marble building houses the grave of a Sufi saint under an ornate wooden canopy adorned with a Mother of Pearl mosaic.
Elephant Conservation and Care Centre - Rediscover your love for animals by meeting the unsung heroes of Agra - the volunteers of Wildlife SOS at the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre, home to 20 elephants and 175 sloth bears rescued from dire conditions.
During your visit to the conservation center, you will fall in love with these wonderful animals. Watch bears play or walk with elephants as they bathe in the Yamuna River twice a day. Show them love and affection, and they will become your friends. It is important to note that riding elephants or bears is strictly prohibited. However, you are welcome to volunteer and support the NGO under the supervision of Wildlife SOS staff. Wildlife SOS is an NGO dedicated to caring for these elephants and bears, and a small donation of around USD 25 per person helps them continue their work. “Agra Beyond Taj Mahal” is a special program of 02 days designed to enjoy and cheer the beauty of the Taj Mahal and many more architectural marvels. Undoubtedly, the Taj Mahal is the most beautiful and most photographed building and so is always a highlight of any tour program in India. Besides the Taj Mahal, Agra is also home to two more UNESCO World Heritage Sites- Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
Agra has been the capital of India during the Great Mughals and later the capital of North-Western Province during the British. Each Mughal ruler and British left their marks in the form of many other architectural marvels like Chini-Ka-Roza, Aram Bagh, Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra, etc, and many graveyards with intricate carvings. Unfortunately, these smaller architectural specimens have been overshadowed by the beauty of the Taj Mahal. “Agra Beyond Taj Mahal” is to showcase some of these lesser-known monuments through a Heritage Walk of the city which has numerous marks of history.
