- Taj Mahal - The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan as a tribute to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during childbirth in 1631. Her death left the emperor so devastated that it is said his hair turned grey almost immediately. Construction of the Taj began the following year; while the main structure is believed to have been completed in eight years, the entire complex was not finished until 1653. Shortly after its completion, Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb and confined in Agra Fort, where he spent his remaining years gazing at his masterpiece through a window. Upon his death in 1666, Shah Jahan was laid to rest here beside his cherished Mumtaz.
- Agra Fort - Construction along the Yamuna River’s bank was initiated by Emperor Akbar in 1565 on the site of an earlier fort. Additional enhancements were made, notably by his grandson Shah Jahan, who favored white marble as a building material. Initially built as a military fortification, Shah Jahan later converted it into a palace, and it eventually became his opulent prison for eight years after his son Aurangzeb took control in 1658.
The fort, shaped like an ear, features massive double walls that rise over 20 meters and span 2.5 kilometers in circumference. The Yamuna River once flowed along the fort’s straight eastern edge, where the emperors had their private bathing ghats. It houses a labyrinth of buildings, creating a city within a city, including extensive underground sections. However, many structures were destroyed over the years by Nadir Shah, the Marathas, the Jats, and finally the British, who used the fort as a garrison. Even today, a significant portion of the fort is utilized by the military.
