This iconic ivory-white marble mausoleum is located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India. Commissioned in 1632 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, it was built to enshrine the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and also houses Shah Jahan’s own tomb.

• Buland Darwaza - Constructed by Emperor Akbar in the 1570s, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fatehpur Sikri, meaning “City of Victory,” served as the Mughal Empire’s capital for approximately a decade. Today, it boasts a well-preserved array of monuments, palaces, temples, and mosques, all showcasing a cohesive red sandstone architectural style.

Encircled by walls, this historic city is perched on a rocky ridge. Although Akbar was a Muslim ruler, the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri incorporates both Islamic and Hindu elements. Despite its magnificence, the city was deserted by the early 17th century, though people continue to reside outside its ancient walls.
