- Taj Mahal - The Taj Mahal is an Islamic ivory-white marble mausoleum located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, India. Commissioned in 1631 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, it was built to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and also contains the tomb of Shah Jahan himself.
The mausoleum’s construction was largely finished by 1643, though additional phases of the project continued for another decade. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.” It is widely considered the finest example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India’s rich history. The Taj Mahal draws over 6 million visitors annually and was named a winner of the New 7 Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative in 2007.
- Agra Fort - Agra Fort is a historic fort located in Agra, India. Constructed between 1565 and 1573 for Mughal Emperor Akbar, it served as the main residence for the rulers of the Sikarwar clan of Rajputs until the Mughals took over, and for the Mughal Dynasty until 1638 when the capital moved from Agra to Delhi. It was also referred to as the “Lal-Qila”, “Fort Rouge” or “Qila-i-Akbari”. Before being captured by the British, the Marathas were the last Indian rulers to occupy it. In 1983, Agra Fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated about 2.5 km northwest of its more renowned sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort is more accurately described as a walled city.
