Antigua - Welcome! We’re absolutely thrilled to have you join us on an incredible adventure in Antigua Guatemala! Our journey begins with us picking you up from your hotel lobby. Don’t forget to have a fulfilling breakfast and pack a snack for later. We’ll embark on a picturesque one-hour drive, taking us to the charming village of La Soledad, nestled on the Pacific slope of the magnificent Acatenango Volcano.
Acatenango Volcano - As we arrive in La Soledad, get ready to meet your fantastic tour guide! They will provide you with special instructions for the hike ahead. We’ll conquer the trail, which consists of four unique microclimates, each lasting about an hour. Our hike commences with a thrilling ascent through local farm fields, followed by a captivating journey through an ancient cloud forest. The diversity of flora and fauna will leave you spellbound, and the fresh mountain air will invigorate your senses.
But that’s not all! As we exit the cloud forest, prepare to be amazed by breathtaking views of neighboring volcanoes and the mesmerizing Cuchumatanes mountain chain. And guess what? As night falls, you’ll be treated to a truly spectacular natural show. The nearby Fuego Volcano, located right next to Acatenango, often erupts, showcasing fiery lava that illuminates the dark sky. It’s an awe-inspiring sight, perfect for capturing stunning photos and videos, making your experience truly unforgettable.
Acatenango Volcano - After an exhilarating hike, we’ll reach the base camp, a place of rest and relaxation. Take in the serene surroundings as our skilled guide prepares a delicious camp dinner for you, complete with hot chocolate. Indulge in the flavors of the meal while sharing stories and laughter with your fellow adventurers.

The Acatenango Volcano stands as Guatemala’s third largest. During this excursion, you’ll get to scale it alongside a seasoned local guide armed with first aid knowledge, ensuring your venture is both enjoyable and safe. The journey up the volcano presents a variety of microclimates, transitioning from cultivation lands, through a cloud forest, to a sandy, rocky landscape. Prepare to be awestruck by the panoramic views over Guatemala’s entire volcanic range, and witness the Fuego volcano’s eruptions - situated just adjacent to the Acatenango volcano.
Our first day concludes with a camp set up, where appetizing meals in typical camping style will be served, also offering a perfect opportunity to capture brilliant photos. We guarantee this venture will be unforgettable, igniting your desire to scale more volcanoes!
- Bring all the following: Hiking boots or trekking shoes (no sandals)
- Large-capacity backpack (50L+) with rain cover. You’ll be given food, water bottles, and essentials. You will carry them in your backpack. Sleeping bags and camping gear will be ready at base camp.
- One warm layer and/or windbreaker
- Rain jacket (May thru October)
- Cold-weather clothing for near-freezing night-time temperatures at camp
- Personal toiletries and/or medications
- Camera, hat, sunglasses & sunscreen
- 4 liters of water (minimum)
- Flashlight
