Highlights
  • Ermita de San Telmo - Zumaia is one of the main entrances to the UNESCO geopark. It’s a perfect place to admire incredible, vertical rock strata cutting into the ocean. We’ll stop next to the picturesque San Telmo chapel located right on the edge of a cliff and talk about flysch and karst. The experience wouldn’t be complete without trekking to the lookout located on the very tip of the cliff - take a deep breath and follow the guide!

  • Olatu Txakoli - From the seaside we take a short drive to the beginning of our trail that forms a part of St. James pilgrimage. It’s a beautiful, 2 hour walk through hills covered with Txakoli vineyards and ‘bodegas’. You will learn about the history of the region and also have a chance to observe the traditional way this refreshing, white wine is grown. Wine landscape & the blue ocean horizon - pure pleasure.

  • Gaintza Txakolina - Next stop, Getaria - true Txakoli heaven! Getaria is one of four Txakoli wine regions and also the most renowned one. We chose a small, sustainable winery to embrace the traditional methods of wine making. You will dive in the world of ‘txakoli’ making process, Hondarribi Zuri and Beltza grapes and learn how to serve and pair it. Enough talking - time to try this bubbly, crisp drink!

  • Getaria - After the wine tasting you’ll finally discover the medieval village of Getaria. You’ll dive into the fascinating history of the village and learn about its most famous citizens like Elkano - the first man who circumnavigated the world or Balenciaga - one of the most important fashion designers of all times. Getaria has it all! Medieval charm, fishing traditions, txakoli wine, the best fish seafood restaurants…

  • Asador -Mayflower- Erretegia - Lunch time! Getaria is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in the region and you’ll have an opportunity to try its speciality: charcoal grilled fish and local wine. You can watch how the chefs prepare fish on massive outdoor BBQs. You can’t go more local and authentic than that. It is a 100% zero km meal.

  • Monte Igueldo - It’s time to go back. We will leave Getaria behind and follow the coastal way to Zarautz and Orio from where we will drive up Mount Igueldo. During this scenic ride we will pass green fields, farmhouses and admire incredible views of the ocean.

Additional Information

An ancient phrase from Castile states, ‘The journey is walked with bread and wine.’ This adventure provides the journey (to Santiago), the wine (crisp, effervescent, and tasty), and an upgrade from bread: seared fish. We’ll visit the charming fishing communities in Gipuzkoa, just as they were in Medieval times, explore them, uncover their hidden stories, and learn about their notable descendants. Exciting!

Exploring San Sebastián surrounding areas. - My husband and I greatly enjoyed this fun adventure, it broadened the horizon of San Sebastián, and showed the beauty of the area. We were promptly picked up at our hotel by a very courteous and knowledgeable tourist guide, Borja, to start our adventure. We stopped at places with beautiful beaches, including a beach where Scenes from Game of Thrown was filmed, these views were spectacular! The vineyard visit with wine tasting was excellent. We walked around picturesque costal towns and had lunch at the Mayflower, a beachfront restaurant and had delicious grill fish! Our return trip to San Sebastián was through the mountains again with outstanding views. We highly recommend the tour!
