Highlights
  • Golden Waterfall - Begin your evening adventure to Jiufen by boarding the bus. Settle in for a one-hour ride from Taipei City, where you can enjoy the changing landscapes through the windows while your guide shares engaging and informative commentary.

Your first stop is ShueiNanDong Golden Waterfall, located in the hilly Northeastern Coast of Taiwan, near Jiufen Village. The waterfall is named for its golden color, a result of water passing through mining areas and reacting with sulfur, arsenic, and copper ores. These reactions create a unique acidic mineral water with a golden hue, giving the hillside a bronze-like tint. The waterfall beautifully adorns the lush hillside, with silky water flowing in a picturesque cascade, making it one of Taiwan’s most photogenic waterfalls.

  • Gold Museum, New Taipei Government - The gold mining industry has played a crucial role in the history of Taiwan’s northeastern coast, significantly contributing to the prosperity of Jiufen and its surrounding areas. After marveling at the Golden Waterfall, your next destination is the Gold Museum, formerly known as the Gold Ecological Park.

The park includes more than just the museum building; it features a mine tunnel, the Four Joined Japanese-style Residence, and the Crown Prince Chalet, offering an immersive experience into Taiwan’s gold mining history. The museum proudly displays a 220-kilogram gold bar, certified by the Guinness World Records in 2004, and visitors can physically touch this impressive gold bar. Don’t miss the chance to feel the 999 gold bar with your own hands when you visit.

  • Baoshishan Lookout - After exploring the Gold Museum, continue your journey to the Baoshishan (Baoshi Mountain) Lookout. Once called “Siren Mountain” due to a siren installed by the Japanese government during their colonial rule to signal time for the miners, this lookout is easily accessible with a short climb suitable for all ages. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the Bay of Two Colors and the sunset.
  • Jiufen Old Street - The next highlight of your night tour is Jiufen Old Street. Whether or not you’ve visited during the day, Jiufen Old Street offers a completely different atmosphere at night. The street is lit by red lanterns hanging from the rooftops, creating a magical scene reminiscent of the world-famous animated film “Spirited Away” by Ghibli Studios. Although director Hayao Miyazaki has stated that the movie was not inspired by Jiufen, this fascinating coincidence continues to attract global interest and boost Jiufen’s tourism.

While in Jiufen, it’s highly recommended to visit one of the teahouses, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and freshly brewed tea. Additionally, you can sample various local foods and shop for souvenirs. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the traditional Jiufen dessert—Taro Ball!

  • 水湳洞選煉廠遺址 - Finally, as your Jiufen night tour concludes, you’ll stop at the Remains of the 13 Levels in Jinguashi. This former copper smelter, established in 1933 during the Japanese colonial era when copper mining began in the area, holds significant historical importance for Jinguashi’s copper mining industry.

Today, it stands as an iconic landmark along Taiwan’s northeastern coast. Each evening, the Remains of the 13 Levels is illuminated by warm amber lights from 18:00 to 21:00. Viewed from a distance, the structure resembles an abandoned palace, making it a popular spot for drama and advertising shoots. Capture this enchanting scene to make a memorable end to your journey.

After the tour, board the bus for a smooth return trip to downtown Taipei, which usually takes about an hour. You can choose to get off at Raohe Street Night Market or return to MRT Zhongxiao Xinsheng Station.
