Additional Information

Embark on a journey exploring the historical roots of slavery with this tour. Starting at Malindi’s Dhow Harbour, learn about how it served as a major trading post for human trafficking from Bagamoyo to Zanzibar. Visit Livingstone’s House and the residence of Tippu Tip, an infamous Arab slave trader, and then proceed to the Anglican Church that stands on the location of the old slave market.

Stone Town, at one point in history, served as a central hub for one of the largest and final open-air slave markets in the world. Supervised by Arab traders, the activity in the Swahili Coast continued until the British terminated the practice in 1873. Slaves were transported here from the mainland in dhows, packed so densely that many fell victim to sickness and death or were discarded overboard.
A brief journey to Mbweni leads to the Mbweni ruins, previously a school designed for emancipated slave girls. Exploring the Mangapwani slave caves provides a glimpse into the spaces where hundreds of slaves, awaiting the monsoons and the arrival of dhows, were stored before being banished from their homeland.
