This half-day guided tour starts and concludes at the guest’s hotel. Prison Island boasts a stunning 110-meter sandy beach, featuring both native and introduced plant life, along with a natural tidal pool. Originally, Prison Island was meant for private use as a detention site for uncooperative slaves. However, it was later purchased by General Lloyd Mathews, who constructed the prison in 1893, serving as the central prison for Zanzibar, which is why it is called “Prison Island.”
