In 1993, a turtle sanctuary was launched by the residents of Nungwi in a sizable tidal pool located close to the lighthouse, leading to increased safety for the sea turtles against hunting and consumption. The aquarium is home to turtles of multiple species and various sizes, and is where fishermen bring any turtles caught inadvertently in their nets. Similarly, turtle eggs found at the beach are also brought to this facility for hatching. Once a year in February, there’s a distinctive event where locals, vacationers, hotels, dive centers, and conservationists join hands to help hundreds of baby turtles make their dangerous traverse from the beach to the vast ocean.
