Highlights
  • Mukuni Village - Chief Mukuni’s Village is a Royal village which was founded around the 13th Century. It is home to about 7,000 Leya people. The chief has invited visitors into his village to get a glimpse of how his people have lived for generations and to learn a little about their traditional customs and beliefs.

The Chief’s guides and the people of the village are more than happy to show visitors their huts. They will show you inside, explain how they are built and decorated, introduce you to various craftsmen and women at work and ask you to taste some traditional foods and beer.

This is a working village, not a purpose built tourist attraction, and it is a privilege to be welcomed into their lifestyle.

Additional Information

Chief Mukuni opens his village, the residence of the Leya people, to guests. This presents a distinctive chance to witness the everyday life of natives in a functioning village, not a village fabricated for tourists.

A local will guide you through the village, displaying how traditional huts are constructed and ornamented. You are welcome to explore the interiors, interact with the inhabitants and observe the locals in their daily tasks.

This very village was visited by Dr. David Livingstone on numerous occasions, where he would sit under a huge mango tree in the town square, to converse with the reigning chief.

Since the Chief perceived David Livingstone as a non-believer, he was prohibited from entering the chief’s residence. Two men from this village, who were long-time employees of David Livingstone, transported his remains to the coast post his death near Lake Bangweulu. The successors of these men continue to reside in the village.
