- Trakošćan Castle (Dvor Trakošćan) - Situated in northern Croatia, Trakošćan Castle dates back to the 13th century and is a rare example in Croatia of a structure with fully preserved construction. It is historically linked to the architectural style and life of its owners, the Drašković family. The name “Trakošćan” first appeared in written records in 1334. The cultural heritage of Trakošćan Castle is protected as a historical entity, comprising the castle itself, an adjacent building, a park, and a forest park with a lake. Today, it remains one of the few sites in Croatia that has maintained its original constitution, closely tied to its architectural framework and the lives of its owners.
- Krapina Neanderthal Museum - The modern Krapina Neanderthal Museum is uniquely positioned near the renowned Krapina Neanderthals site “Hušnjakovo,” making it a distinctive visitor attraction.
The Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the Hušnjakovo excavation site, where in 1899, the world’s largest collection of Neanderthal fossil bones was discovered. Over nine hundred Neanderthal fossil bones and numerous fossil remains of Pleistocene animals, such as the woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, wolf, elk, giant deer, and many others, were found in the cave’s sandstone deposits. More than a thousand stone tools provide evidence of the material culture of the Krapina Neanderthals. Dating back to 125,000 BC, this site is one of the most important paleoanthropological locations globally.
The Museum’s architecture reflects the habitat of prehistoric humans, with its semi-cave design, volume, proportions, and facade inspired by the ancient Krapina semi-cave.
